They had a hard time making it after the war and at times Epp 1 CONC and his brother, Samuel, were hired out to neighbors for food and 1 CONC clothing. 1 CONT 1 CONT He had no formal education. Family said he didn't believe in it. That 1 CONC would be interesting because his father had been a school teacher before 1 CONC the war. 1 CONT 1 CONT When Epp bought the Pulliam farm from John Crawford, John told folks that 1 CONC Epp would never pay off the farm and that he would get it back by 1 CONC default, but Epp paid it off in a surprisingly short time. 1 CONT 1 CONT Epp once made a muzzle loading rife from scratch. 1 CONT 1 CONT Claude and Alice (Pulliam) Burgess lived in Epp's old house. 1 CONT 1 CONT Epp is buried in the Liberty Hill Baptist Church Cemetary in Stephens 1 CONC County with his wife, Eugenia Stonecypher. 0 @NI00068@ NOTE 1 CONC 1 CONT Bob was a school teacher in the Gumlog elementary school. He was given a 1 CONC certificate of competency in "2nd Class E. Grammer" by the Franklin 1 CONC County Board of Examiners on July 5, 1852, at the board meeting in 1 CONC Carnsville. He was given a certificate in "Orthography, Reading , and 1 CONC Arithmatic", and a certificate in "English Grammer" on August 27, 1853 1 CONC by the board at their meeting in Carnsville. 1 CONT 1 CONT Bob turned in the following persons as suitable for trustees for his 1 CONC school: 1 CONT 1 CONC Oliver Harrison 1 CONT 1 CONC Robert Stribling 1 CONT 1 CONC John Garner 1 CONT 1 CONT People in the community would bring their mail to him so he could read it 1 CONC to them. 1 CONT 1 CONT Robert T. Pulliam was commissioned as a Justice of the Peace in Franklin 1 CONC County, Ga., district 213, on Jan. 27, 1857. Oliver Harrison was also 1 CONC commissioned the same day. In 1859, he and R. Stribling were commissioned 1 CONC for the same District on Jan. 31. 1 CONT 1 CONT He joined the Confederate Army as a private on May 12, 1862. He recieved 1 CONC a $50 "bounty" when he joined. His Captain was Russell A. Jones, and his 1 CONC General was Kirby Smith. 1 CONT 1 CONT When Bob Pulliam went off to war, the children followed him up the road 1 CONC crying and begging him to come back and stay with them. 1 CONT 1 CONT On May 16, 1862, he was appointed 1st Corporal, Company G 34th Regiment 1 CONT 1 CONC Georgia Volunteer Infantry 1 CONT 1 CONC Army of Tennessee 1 CONT 1 CONC C.S.A. 1 CONT (His company was also known as Company C) 1 CONT 1 CONT He was wounded at Richmond Ky. on August 30, 1862, in a battle that was a 1 CONC victory for the Confederates. It was the first offical engagement of the 1 CONC 34th Reg. He was captured by Union forces at Harrodsburg, Ky. on October 1 CONC 11, 1862, during the retreat from Perryville. Since there was no official 1 CONC action at Harrodsburg, one might speculate at to what part his injury had 1 CONC in his being captured. Was he a straggler that could not keep up with his 1 CONC Company because of his wound? The nature of the injuries he recieved are 1 CONC not known. 1 CONT 1 CONT He was transported from Lexington, KY to the Union POW Camp #2 at 1 CONC Louisville, KY, on Nov. 29. He was supposed to had been sent to 1 CONC Vicksburg along with about 371 other Confederate POW's, and in fact is 1 CONC shown on a roll of prisoners sent there via Cairo, ILL, on the Steamboat 1 CONC "City of Madison" on Dec 5, 1862. Those exchange prisoners was recieved 1 CONC near Vicksburg on Dec. 22, 1862. However, Bob Pulliam died in the 1 CONC Louisville hospital on either Dec 17 or 19 of either acute dysentery or 1 CONC pueumonia (probably both), at 35 years of age. He is buried in the Cave 1 CONC Hill Cemetary in Louisville along with over 200 other Confederate 1 CONC soldiers. His gravestone, which records his death as 12/13/1862 is under 1 CONC a large beautiful cedar tree. Also buried in this same cemetary are 1 CONC George Rogers Clark, explorer, Indian fighter and founder of Louisville 1 CONC and Colonal Sanders of Kentucky Fried Chicken fame. 1 CONT 1 CONT Bob's brother, George W. Pulliam, was also in the same Company & Regiment. 1 CONT He was captured in Vicksburg and paroled there. George spent some time in 1 CONC a C.S.A. hospital in Jackson, Mississippi, but surrived the war. 1 CONC Evidently there were many cousins and friends of the family that signed 1 CONC up about the same time for the war from Franklin County that served 1 CONC together in the 34th Regiment. Since I cannot find any written history 1 CONC on the 34th, I am gathering infomation on it and hope to eventually 1 CONC publish a brief history of it's battles and experiences. Almost all of 1 CONC the members of the 34th were from Franklin County, GA. 1 CONT 1 CONT Copies of Bob's official war records were provided by the kindness of 1 CONC Darrell Ertzberger who copied them at the National Archives in 1 CONC Washington, D.C. and mailed them to me. 1 CONT 1 CONT Tragically, Bob's family did not know what happened to him. Evidently his 1 CONC wife and all 3 children died before the family found out about his death 1 CONC and burial place. His granddaughter, Julia, related that when the family 1 CONC found out, everyone in the room cried with sadness and relief. They were 1 CONC sad that he died in the POW hospital so far from his loved ones, but they 1 CONC were relieved and glad he had died honorably and had not taken up with 1 CONC another woman, as was the case with many of the Yankee soldiers that had 1 CONC done so in Georgia and simply left their familes back north. It was said 1 CONC that some had offered that theory from time to time to explain why they 1 CONC had not heard anything from Robert, but his good name and memory were 1 CONC vindicated by the war records. 0 @NI00069@ NOTE 1 CONC Nancy Thomas had a hard time making a living after the war. "She let Epp 1 CONC and Sam hire out for what they eat and for the clothes they wore. They 1 CONC worked for a Mr. Smith. One day Epp was carrying lunch to Mr. Smith at a 1 CONC still and got him a piece of bread out of the bucket and they got after 1 CONC him for getting it. Another time Epp was at the still when an earthquake 1 CONC come he was sitting on a barrel of whiskey and could feel and hear it 1 CONC sloshing in the barrel." 1 CONT 1 CONT Nancy lived across the hollow from where Jess Dooley later lived on the 1 CONC river. She died at the home of her son, Samuel, in what is now Stephens 1 CONC County, and is buried in the Pleasant Hill Cemetary. 1 CONT 1 CONT In the 1870 census of Franklin County, Ga., Nancy was shown as head of 1 CONC household, living with her two sons, next door to her parents, John and 1 CONC Elizabeth Thomas. 0 @NI00071@ NOTE 1 CONC "Sam and Martha Pulliam loved children. Mr Wiliams' sister died and asked 1 CONC them about taking her baby Edd Smith that was 3 yrs old. They said they 1 CONC would, but they did not adopt him. He may have also taught some school, as a Thomas 1 CONC Pulliam was examined in "Orthography, Reading, Arithmetic, Practical 1 CONC School Teaching", on July 4, 1853, in Carnsville Ga. His son, Robert was 1 CONC a school teacher, so maybe there was a common teaching link between the 1 CONC two. 1 CONT 1 CONT ************************************************************************** 1 CONC ********************************** 1 CONT The following quotes were from the handwritten records of Maudie Lee 1 CONC (Pulliam) Crawford. 1 CONT 1 CONT "The Owens ladies said that Thomas and Matilda Burroughs Pulliam had a 1 CONC son named Joseph." 1 CONT 1 CONT "They had a son named Benjamin (Ben) who walked off from home one day and 1 CONC never came back, but one time it was believed he went to Ala. or Miss., 1 CONC one." 1 CONT 1 CONT "Thomas G.
