A short Historical and Physical Discription of Wythe County, Virginia
Showing all its Mineral, Agricultural and Commercial Resources and Prospects.
Published by Order of Its Board of Supervisors for Distribution at the
Jamestown Ter-Centennial Exposition. 1907
Compilied by H.M. Heuser Wytheville, Virginia
(in reference to Iron)
Iron.
Iron ore being found in such profusion in Wythe County, it is not surprising
to learn that David PEIRCE, an emigrant from Pennsylvania, made pig iron at
his "Poplar Camp" furnace as early as 1779.
the "Raven Clift" furnance was built in 1810, the "Little Wythe" in 1819, the
"Cedar Run" in 1832, and from then until 1882 at least twelve more chrcoal,
cold-blast furnances were erected and operate, when the large hot-blast ones
came into vogue. Forges were also erected at an early day in Wythe County.
Among the first was that of David PEIRCE on Cripple Creek, near Ivanhoe, in
about 1800.
Peirce, David was sold 500-acre tract with Forges, etc. on Dec. 9, 1800, by
Robert
Sanders
Peirce, David on March 11, 1806 agreed to furnish Sampson King and Trigg
$2,553.92 merchantable bar iron at $123.33 per ton of 2240 lbs.
Peirce, David on March 12, 1806 gave to william King and John J. Trigg a
mortgage
on a 500-acre tract of land know as the Peirce Forge for the faithful
performance of
above mentioned contract.
On December 10, 1838, the 500-acre tract was partitioned among the David
Peirce
heirs.
Peirce, David purchased on June 10, 1817 from John Evans 200 acres of land on
Reed Island known as the High Rock Forge tract. On March 19, 1842, James
Stephens purchased from David Peirce heirs 200 acres of land on Reed Island
Creek, known as the High Rock Forge tract.
