He was reared to agricultural pursuits, receiving a good education in the
common schools. He began doing for himself in the capacity of a school teacher
and farmer. In 1878 he engaged in the mercantile business in Redbird,
Gasconade County
until 1880. Then he opened a store in Knob View, Crawford Co for 18 months. In
1882 he purchased his interest in his present business at Oak hill handling the
produce of the country and assorted general merchandise. he was the postmaster
of Oak
