John C. Black, Plaza, Dies of Heart Attack.

Plaza Postmaster Was Early Resident Here and Had
Many Friends in This Community.

John C. Black, Postmaster at Plaza for 25 years, and a brother of Robert Black of this city, died of a heart attack at his home in Plaza Monday evening. He had been in good health so far as his family knew. That evening his wife stepped out on the back porch and found him lying there dead.

"Jack" Black was well known here, had many friends here and to the oldtimers seemed just a Berthold boy loaned to Plaza for a while. He came to Berthold in 1906, and filed on a homestead in the south country. On December 1st, 1907, he married Edna Pond, a Berthold girl, and that same day they took up residence on their homestead and have lived at Plaza ever since. But they never forgot their relatives and friends here and were frequent and welcome visitors.

John C. Black was born at Elmwood, Ontario, Canada Feb 2, 1881, and at the age of 18, came to Northwood, N. Dak. He attended high school at Fosston, Minn., and also the University of North Dakota. In 1906 he came to Berthold and worked here and Des Lacs for two years. He had been postmaster at Plaza since 1928. He was active in civic affairs and a prominent Mason.

Survivors include his wife, 3 sons, Harlan, Minot; Noel, Fargo and Sgt Ralph, Camp Robinson, Ark, and one daughter, Necia, Minot. A brother, Robert B., of Berthold and five sisters, Mrs Charles Wilkinson, Elmwood, Ont; Mrs Thomas Latimer, Toronto; Mrs William Latimer, Chesley, Ont; Mrs John McConkey. Walkerton, Ont; and Mrs Ed Noble, Greenock, Ont also survive. There is one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at Plaza at 2 o'clock on Friday afternoon, and following the service the remains will be brought to Wildrose Cemetery here, where they will be interned in the Pond family lot.
