OBITUARY

John BLACK

1844 – 1918

 

One of the fine old men of this district has gone to his long home in the person of Mr John BLACK of Elmwood who passed away last Sunday in his 75th year. Death was due to a general breakdown. Deceased was born in Markham, Ontario and moved early in his life with his parents to a farm East of Allan Park, Bentinck Township. In 1868 he married Miss Mary CAIN, daughter of the late Robert CAIN of Hanover. He attended Collingwood Collegiate Institute, and later taught school for 12 years U.S.S., No 2, B & B, in Bentinck township. He then moved to Sullivan township and taught school for two years at Sharon. He then took up farming on lot 6, concession 9 Bentinck where he lived until about 10 years ago, when he moved to Elmwood and retired. Deceased was a man of staunch integrity and held the esteem of a very wide circle of friends. He held a number of official positions being a Justice of The Peace, etc. He leaves a widow and twelve children to mourn his death as follows; Wm Egerton of Grand Forks, N. Dakota; Alexander on the Bentinck homestead; Mrs T.H. LATIMER of Kerrisdale, B.C.; Mrs Hugh WILLIAMS of Peachland, B.C; Robert of Berthold, N. Dakota; John of Plaza, N. Dakota; Mrs W.W. LATIMER of Walkerton; Mrs Charles WILKINSON of Elmwood; Mrs S.A. DICKSON of Tregarva, Saskatchewan; Mrs J.H. McConkey of Greenock; Mrs C.E. Noble of Cargill and Pte A.J. BLACK with the American Expeditionary Force now overseas. Deceased acted as assessor for the township of Bentinck for several years. He was a member of the Orange Order and a Conservative in politics. The funeral took place on Tuesday afternoon in the Mennonite cemetery in Elmwood. Rev. Mr Remington, the Elmwood Methodist minister, having charge of the services.
