Mrs. Mary BLACK (CAIN)

1849 – 1929

On Saturday, June 8 Mrs John BLACK passed away at her home in Elmwood at the advanced age of 81 years. She was born in Napanee, Ontario in 1849 and at the age of four years moved with her parents, Mr and Mrs Robert CAIN to a farm in Bentinck 2.5 miles from Elmwood, where she was married to John BLACK, who predeceased her 11 years ago. To them were born seven daughters and five sons, ten of whom survive; viz, William E of Fargo, N. Dakota; Alexander of Elmwwod; Maggie (Mrs T.H. LATIMER) of Vancouver; Robert of Berthold, N. Dakota; John of Plaza, N. Dakota; Bertha (Mrs W.W. LATIMER) of Walkerton; Mary (Mrs Chas. WILKINSON) of Emwood; Muriel (Mrs S.A. Dickson) of Tregarva, Saskatchewan; Eva (Mrs John McConkey) of Greenock; Gertie (Mrs Ed NOBLE) of Paisley. Two of the family are predeceased, namely, Andrew J who was killed overseas and Annie (Mrs Hugh WILLIAM) of British Columbia, who died six years ago. There are also forty grandchildren and three great grandchildren.

The late Mrs BLACK was the youngest and last surviving member of a family of five, the others all of whom are deceased, being; Mrs James BALL and Robert CAIN of Hanover; Eddy of Wiarton and William of N. Dakota. She was a member of the United Church for many years and had a pleasant disposition and winsome character which endeared her to her many acquaintances.

The funeral took place on Tueday afternoon of last week from her late residence to the Elmwood cemetery. The pall-bearers were; Messrs Fred COOPER, Harry PEPPER, Geo BOULDEN, Alex WILSON, Thos CUNNINGHAM and Wm CAIN. The service were conducted by Rev. Mr YOUNG.
