Bold names are those of seniors for the year indicated. Other names were taken from group photographs and other class notes. These names may not be complete or correct. Students listed in the 7th grade class, may not have been in the school for graduation five years later.
YEAR indicates in which Yearbook the information was found.
The staff is listed after the students. There wasn't much of a turnover, but some people were moved or promoted.
A list of advertisers follows with the street address if listed in the ad, and what type of business if listed. I've included a couple examples of ads. Just for FUN, certainly not for profit or political unrest.
Lastly there is a listing of "Patrons", contributors to the yearbook. Most years they are handwritten and I can't read the names.
Please NOTE:
I have NO OTHER information about these people. This isn't my school, this isn't my class, these aren't my friends.
Well - that isn't exactly true. My father is listed as a senior in 1938, so I know the names, I don't know the people.
EXCEPT -
There are some remarkable people listed below. They graduated from Oakwood High School and went on to seriously impact the Dayton area. There are doctors and lawyers, statesmen, businessmen and a tennis star listed.
There are EDUCATORS listed. Mary Louise Karstaedt was my 9th grade Latin teacher, a graduate of Miami University, a Delta Zeta member, a life-long Oakwood resident and a wonderful person who touched many lives. Mr. John Lewis is listed as Principal and mathematics teacher below. He NEVER stopped teaching. More than 25 years after his picture graced the Acorn's pages, I had him as a substitute teacher at Fairmont. Mack Hummon was universally liked. The Oakwood Football stadium is named for him.
These are the people that shaped the world I grew up in.
If you have stories about them you would like to share, send them along and I'll post them here. Pamela Paddock Arnold July 13, 2001. Email - pparnold@earthlink.net
