To send messages to everyone on the list use the address PADDOCK-L@rootsweb.com

Mailing lists work by allowing members to send one email with a question or comment to the "list". Every member of the list will receive that email. Each person may then respond to the list, so that everyone shares the information. On lists with a large number of members, many many many emails will be sent and received. It is possible to sign up for a "Digest" mode. Each "Digest" is several original messages grouped together in one email. You will still receive all the messages - just less actual emails. The Digests are sent out periodically - either by date or number or size. Sometimes it is like getting last Sunday's paper - too much too late!

The Paddock Mailing List is comprised of a select group of wonderful Paddock researchers. The purpose of the list is to share genealogical information about the Paddock Family. This is not the place to discuss viruses, hoaxes, political issues or horses!

Rootsweb does an excellent job of filtering out spam and viruses. Some of the current nasty viruses work by finding email addresses on the computer they are infecting and then sending themselves to all those addresses they have found. These are NOT going through Rootsweb. They are coming directly from an infected computer to your computer. DON'T open attachments you weren't expecting. Keep your virus software up to date. Be aware.

THE EMAIL ACCOUNT/ADDRESS YOU USE TO SEND THE MESSAGE IS THE ONE THAT WILL BE SUBSCRIBED OR UNSUBSCRIBED.

If you sign up at home with the account user@home.com you will not be able to unsubscribe from work with the account user@work.com . The system doesn't know you are the same person.

This sounds so simple, until you change providers, your service suddenly changes your email name or appends something to it, or your hard drive crashes and you try to work from another computer.

You will get a "Welcome Letter" when you sign up for the list. If you can't unsubscribe, compare your current email address to the one on your welcome letter. If they are different, send an email to me with the original address and I will unsubscribe you.

The Rootsweb mailing lists are ARCHIVED. Every message is stored at Rootsweb. The archives may be searched. Go to http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl and enter PADDOCK-L in the search field.

Don't include all of the original message with your replies - it wastes space and makes searching more difficult. Cut and paste parts of the original message into your reply.

PLEASE change the subject line when replying to the list. Use the subject line to indicate what your message is about.

Don't use your surnames in your signatures on messages - if you sign each email with

"Happy Hunter - Searching everywhere for PADDOCK - SMITH - JONES"

The search machines will find all of your emails whenever anyone searches for "Happy" or "Hunter" or "Paddock" or "Smith" or "Jones".

Break up the names with spaces or stars or something....P A D D O C K or P*A*D*D*O*C*K.

I am the list manager and if you have a problem related to the list, please let me know.
