Last Words: All Is Peace
Zachariah Waxham, an Old Resident, Falls Quietly Asleep
Born in New England He Was a Pioneer of Two States
Zachariah Waxham died at his home on Corey's bluff Wednesday night at 8 o'clock. For two weeks he had been suffering from grip, which rapidly sapped his strength. Several days ago it was thought the end was near and his children in distant cities were notified. His son, Dr. F.E. Waxham of Denver, hurried here and was almost constantly at the bedside of his father until last evening, when the old gentleman fell quietly asleep for the last time.
Zachariah Waxham was born near the city of Ely, England, Dec. 10, 1821. He came to America when nine years of age. His youth was spent in Erie, Pa. In 1843 he married Caroline Nevins of Fredonia, N.Y., and the young couple came west, locating in La Porte county, Indiana, then a wild, unbroken country.
In 1865 Mr. Waxham came with his family to Rockford, where he has since resided, making many friends through his quiet, gentle ways and kindly disposition. In 1882 his wife, who had borne the hardships of pioneer life, with him, died. Seven years later Mr. Waxham married Alice O. Fay, who survives him.
Mr. Waxham was a member of the Second Congregational church for many years. He was a sincere and consistent christian, living a quiet life, doing good without ostentation. In his last conscious moments he expressed his willingness to lay down the burden, saying "All is peace." He met death as a christian, with unfaltering faith in the life to come.
Besides the widow, four sons and one daughter survive. Ernest L. of Chicago, George of Greene Cove Spring, Fla., Dr. F.E. Waxham of Denver, Dr. Charles H. of Sugar City, Colo., and Mrs. Nelson Ruple of North Liberty, Ind. He has a brother, James Waxham, living in Beatrice, Neb.
The funeral will be held from the late residence, south of the city limits, at 2 p.m. Friday, Rev. P.M. Snyder officiating. The bearers will be W.L. Frisbie, A.S.T. Ogilsby, Levi Fuller, W.M. Pond, Andrew McGregor and W.I. Inman. Interment in West side cemetery.
