Herbert Waxham, Civil War Veteran, Succumbs Today
Herbert Waxham, veteran of the Civil War, died at 1:30 today in his 92nd year. Mr. Waxham had been in failing health for some time but was able to attend the reunion of the Grand Army at Grand Rapids in September and seemed to have been benefitted by the trip.
He was born in Chautauqua county, New York, June 26, 1844. On July 15, 1863 he enlisted in Company D, 128 Indiana Infantry, at South Bend, Indiana. His unit was in the first division of General Schofield's army and participated in the four month's campaign to reach Atlanta. He was taken ill during the seige of Atlanta and sent to Madison, Ind., where the government had a general hospital.
Mr. Waxham's wife died here in October, 1931, of a stroke of apoplexy. Two sons, H.O. Waxham, former county traffic officer, and one other survive.
