Indiana. He was an heir in his father's, (my third great grandfther) John
Ross, estate partition suit. He was the guardian ofthe children of his sister,
Nancy Ross Jackson: Andrew, Philletta, and John Jackson.
His brother, William, stated in his biography published in 1889 that
Johnston "is the owner of a large stock ranch in Bee County, Texas, was
married and the father of eleven children, only four of whom are living."

He frequently is listed as Johnson Ross including the cemetery stone of his
son Jacob in the Jefferson Cemetery, Clinton County.
In the 1860 census of Edgar County, Illinois he is listed as age 49; he is
listed as age 64 in the 1880 census of Bee County, Texas, occupation sheep
running. He listed his mother and father as being born in Pennsylvania.
The article on the Ross family in the Bee County, Texas Family Histories
gives the history of the family in Texas and is the source of that data. It
states that later "some of the family moved to new territory in Missouri,
purchasing land in the Cunningham area a few miles south of Sumner, Missouri
on maps today". Beth Richardson writes that Johnston and his sons William
Henry and Clayton went to the Brookfield-Sumner-Cunningham area of Missouri in
1881.
