Womack Early Records in America

Pre-1851 United States Womack Identification Project

Florida and South Carolina

NOTE: The following counties are where records of people with the Womack surname (or variations thereof) have been found prior to 1851. This does not include married female Womacks, or people who had Womack ancestors, but not the Womack surname.

See the main Pre-1851 US Womack project page for more information.

See the book Little River Pioneers by Nina Watson Cottrell, Thomas Ray Knox and Miles Kenan Womack, Jr. This book discusses the descendants of David Womsack in Gadsden Co, FL.

See also, the WGN message posted by Miles K. Womack, Jr on 30 Sep 1998, in which he corrects much of the wrong information about the Gadsden Co, FL Womacks. Most importantly, he points out that Benjamin Womack (married to Nancy Jones) was NOT a son of David Womack.

As an aside, let me (Robert Burke) point out that David Womack was never in Screven Co, GA, as so many WorldConnect entries have him. The evidence points to him being near his father in Wilkes, Greene, and Hancock Cos, GA (they did not move much, counties were forming around them); and later in Wilkinson and Pulaski Cos, GA. This family then moved to Gadsden Co, FL.

Benjamin Womack (who married Nancy Jones) was in Screven Co, GA in 1820. In 1830 and 1840, he was in Thomas Co, GA. He is mentioned in Georgia newspapers as the sheriff of Thomas Co, GA. Need the evidence that Jones was Nancy's maiden name, perhaps the estate records of her father, Francis Jones? Benjamin settled in the part of Gadsden Co, FL which was made into Liberty Co, FL, while David Womack's family were in the area that remained in Gadsden.

Two Benjamin Womacks are said to have married Nancy Jones, one the son of Benjamin Womack and Mary Lanier, and the other the son of William Womack and his wife Elizabeth (possible maiden name Schumann). Benjamin son of William was born 11 Oct 1794 according to Bible records; he was probably born in Effingham Co, GA. I believe this Benjamin likely died young, since the Lanier connection seems stronger.

Benjamin Womack, Sr supposedly married Mary Lanier who born 1759 in Duplin Co, NC, dau of Benjamin Lanier. What is the proof of this? Are there some Lanier estate records that have this information? The Laniers came from NC to Effingham Co, GA (which was then St. Matthews Parish) about 1770, when Bejamin Lanier received a land grant. Benjamin Womack, Sr was NOT born in Duplin Co, NC (some internet data says this). Rather, he was almost certainly the son of Frederick Womack of Effingham Co, GA, since this was the only known Womack family in the region. Note that most genealogies list William as the only son of Frederick; however there is evidence that Frederick also had sons named Wiley, Allen, John, and Frederick, so it is entirely possible Benjamin was a son as well. This would make the two Benjamin Womacks who were said to have married Nancy Jones first cousins.

Benjamin Womack and Mary Lanier had children Sally, Lucy, Betsy, Hannah, and Benjamin, according to the undocumented Lanier family info. Benjamin Womack, Sr died around 1795 according to this info, and Mary (Lanier) Womack re-married to Michael Dickson. Here, things get a little fuzzy, because James Caswell Dickson, supposedly the son of Michael Dickson and Mary Lanier, was born about 1795, the same time Benjamin Womack, Jr was born. One Dickson family researcher has info that suggests James Caswell Dickson was the son of Michael Dickson by a first wife named Ann. (see http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/GASCREVE/2000-01/0948211721). So, it is possible Benjamin Womack, Sr was alive in 1800. Michael Dickson and Mary Lanier supposedly had children born in 1803 and 1806. Mary would have been 46 (almost 47) when the last child was born, which is possible, but stretching it a bit. Note that the only information I have on Benjamin Womack, Sr and his marriage to Mary Lanier comes from undocumented research on the Lanier family; I have never seen Benjamin Womack, Sr in Georgia records myself.

Screven Co, GA (sometimes spelled "Scriven") was formed in 1793 from Effingham and Burke Counties. The federal censuses before 1820 for Screven Co, GA are lost. In 1820, Benjamin Womack was in Screven Co, GA, see my early census records. On the page before Benjamin Womack, there is the household of Michael Dickson (100101 / 11101) and John Jones (200100 / 10010). Presumambly, Mary Lanier was the oldest female in Michael Dickson's household. John Jones was probably related to Nancy Jones, wife of Benjamin Womack, Jr, since he is near Benjamin Womack for three censuses (see below), and he had children out of wedlock with a Womack female, likely one of Benjamin Womack, Jr's sisters (see below).

In the 1830 Census of Screven Co, GA, Mary Dickson is listed in a HH with no males, one female in her 20s, and another in her 70s. Mary would have been 70 years old. There is another Mary Dickson in the 1840 Census of Screven Co, GA, but this Mary Dickson is much younger. So Mary Lanier Womack Dickson likely died in Screven Co, GA between 1830 and 1840.

Benjamin Womack, Jr and John Jones moved to Thomas Co, GA where they were listed in the 1830 Census with Benjamin on the line after John Jones (0100 01 / 0020 01). In the 1840 Census of Jones Dist, Thomas Co, GA, John Jones (0010 101 / 0001 001) was on the page after Benjamin Womack. Jones District may have been named after John Jones's family.

On 9 Dec 1843, John Jones of Thomas Co, GA had the names of three Womacks legally changed to Jones (see http://www.westberry-moses.com/main/files/namechange.pdf). The way he did this was an admission of paternity, and done so these children could inherit from him.

  • Jones, Augustus from Augustus Womack by John Jones, Thomas Co. 12-09-1843
  • Jones, Martha from Martha Womack by John Jones, Thomas Co, now Martha Braswell, wife of Uriah Braswell. 12-09-1843
  • Jones, Nancy from Nancy Womack by John Jones, Thomas Co. 12-09-1843

Unfortunately, we do not know the name of the Womack female with whom John Jones had these children; I assume she was the sister of Benjamin Womack, Jr, and the oldest female in John Jones's household in the 1820, 1830, and 1840 censuses. John Jones had a will in Thomas Co, GA in the 1840s which I have not seen yet. Note that there are marriage records for all three of John Jone's children in Thomas Co, GA (Martha's marriage record lists her husband as "Hugh" Braswell instead of Uriah).

We know the DNA halotype of the descendants of Frederick Womack, so if there are any male Womack descendants of Benjamin Womack and Nancy Jones, than a DNA test could help prove the theory that Benjamin Womack, Sr who married Mary Lanier was the son of Frederick.

New Info (28 July 2007). I copied the will of Benjamin Lanier (Screven Co, GA, dated 21 Apr 1817, proved 3 Nov 1817). Benjamin mentions daughter Mary (no last name) and her daughters Sally, Lucy, Betsey, and Hannah (no last names). In the next item, he also mentions grandson "Benjn. Wammock". Also, I found a Screven deed from Michael Dickson to Benj Wammock (Book K, p.166, dated 6 Mar 1819, recorded 25 Dec 1819). I did not copy, just took a brief look. The deed mentions the estate of Benjamin Lanier and is signed by Michael Dickson and Mary Dickson, with George Newton and Elizabeth Wammock witnesses.

So, from these two pieces of evidence, it appears Mary Lanier was married to a Womack, possibly Benjamin Sr. I think that Michael Dickson waited until 1819 to give Benjamin Womack, Jr his share of his grandfather's estate, because Benjamin turned 21 in 1819 (which jibes with his age of 52 in the 1850 Census). So, if Benjamin Womack, Jr was born in 1798, Mary Lanier could not have been the mother of Michael Dickson's son, James Caswell Dickson, who was born about 1795.

Also, note that Benjamin Womack, Sr named a daughter Lucy. His probable parents are Frederick Womack and Lucy Thrower.

Also, found a research note that Alfred Jackson Womack (son of William >> William >> Frederick) was in the 1845 tax list of Gadsden Co, FL. Was he near Benjamin Womack, Jr (who would have been Alfred's father's cousin)? By 1850, Alfred was in Sumter Co, GA, and the 1850 Census shows all his kids born in GA; but the 1860 Census of Schley Co, GA shows that his son Emmett was born about 1845 in FL.

Eliza P Smith married James Womack on 13 Jul 1828 in Jones Co, GA. In the 1850 Census of Marion Co, FL, Eliza's brother James W Smith is in the HH right before Eliza. Eliza's brother Levi Smith was also in Marion Co, FL in 1850.
Update 22 Nov 2009: Eliza was actually Eliza P Alsobrook, dau of Amos Alsobrook, who was born c1780 in Halifax Co, NC, and died 1838 in Jones Co, GA. This Alsobrook family was intermarried with the Womacks in Halifax Co, NC. Eliza first married Peter Smith on 10 Aug 1820 in Jones Co, GA. She next married James Womack on 13 Jul 1828 in Jones Co, GA. The Smith men in the deed with her were actually her sons, and not her brothers as I originally thought. The death certificate of Iverson Henry Wammock (California, 22 Jan 1914) lists his parents as Henery [sic] Wammock and Jane Asterbrook [sic], both born in NC.

South Carolina
NOTE: There were no Womacks in South Carolina in 1850, but there had been Womacks there off and on beginning in the 1760s. I will add more info on Womacks in the Districts/Counties of SC later.
