Walton County, Georgia was formed in 1818 from Indian Lands. 1850 Census Identification 1850 Census: Lewis P Womack (20 Feb 1820), son of Josiah Womack/Mary Massey of Caswell Co, NC. Lewis P Womack married Sarah F Williamson on 20 Feb 1846 in Caswell Co, NC, with Joseph B Womack (his brother) as the bondsman 1. By 1860, Lewis and Sarah were in Sabine Co, TX 2; by 1870, they were still in Sabine Co, TX 3; by 1880, they were in San Augustine Co, TX 4. See Lewis's mother, Mary (Massey) Womack in Caswell Co, NC for more information. 1840 Census: Britton Womack and wife Jane Stevens. See Monroe Co, GA for more info on Britton Womack/Jane Stevens. Marriages in Walton Co, GA
Miles Smith/Elizabeth Womack were in Muscogee Co, GA in 1850 5; by 1860, Miles and Elizabeth were in Heard Co, GA 6. The censuses indicate Elizabeth was born 1825/6 in NC, she was probably the sister of Britton Womack (who married Jane Stevens in Walton Co, GA), and probably the daughter of Wiley Womack who came from Wake Co, NC, and possibly died in Jones Co, GA; Miles Smith (first name spelled "Mial" in some records), was the son of Britton Smith/Nancy Carden 7. Note that in the 1850 Census Of Heard Co, GA, Susan Womack was living near some Tony families, and in the 1860 Census of Heard Co, GA, Elizabeth (Womack) Smith, wife of Miles Smith, was also living near the same Tony families (spelled Toney in 1860). See also: Descendants of William and Dicey CARDEN (external link worked as of 2 Jul 2006), note that this extended family married into the Huckaby (Huckabee) and Alsabrook (Alsobrooks) families. Joseph R Shipp/Elizabeth Womack were in Walton Co, GA in 1840 8; in Walker Co, GA in 1850 (Joseph R Shipp 40 GA, Eliza A Shipp 35 GA) 9; and in Walker Co, GA in 1860 (J R Ship 47 GA, Eliza E 50 GA) 10. Joseph R Shipp was the son of Richard Shipp and Rebecca Roberts 11. No idea who this Elizabeth Womack was. | Washington Co, GA |
Washington Co, GA was formed in 1784 from Indian land.
1850 Census Identification
TODO - records of desc of Richard Womack III in this county in late 1700s Alexander Womack settled in Washington Co, GA before 1810 (son William was born in GA on 6 Nov 1809). I believe he was the son of Brittain (Albridgton) Womack mentioned in the estate records of Brittain in Chatham Co, NC. See NC Womack Records for a full transcription of Brittain's estate records. Note that Alexander Womack was a party to the Aug 1819 court order against brother Wiley Womack, but Alexander was not a buyer at the estate sale for Brittain Womack, Sr in 1817. This suggests that Alexander was not living close by. Due to the loss of most of the early records of Washington Co, GA, I have so far found only one mention of Alexander Womack, which was the 1821 Georgia Land Lottery, when the orphans of "Alexander Womac" from Washington Co, GA won lot #69 in District 3 of Henry Co, GA. In the 1820 GA Land Lottery, Sarah Wormock, a widow from Washington Co, GA, won lot #428 in District 7 of Appling Co, GA. See GA Womack Records for full Womack records in the GA Land Lotteries. In 1834 and 1835, three Womacks, William and Elizabeth from Washington Co, GA, and Wiley from Wilkinson Co, GA, sold the land (Lot #69, Dist 3, Henry Co, GA) to Thomas J Greene in 3 separate deeds (see deed abstracts below). So, these three were the orphans of Alexander Womack. William Wommack stayed in Washington Co, GA where he married Mary Brantley, daughter of Spencer Brantley. Elizabeth Wommack married Thomas Wood, they were in Washington Co, GA for the 1850 and 1860 Censuses (listed as "Hood" instead of "Wood" in 1860). Wiley Womack married (I think) Rohemia Stuckey, daughter of Startling Stuckey, in Wilkinson Co, GA (adjacent to Washington Co, GA). By 1850, Wiley and Rohemia were in Macon Co, GA. Both William and Elizabeth named sons "Wiley Alexander". Both William and Wiley named daughters "Sarah" (Elizabeth had only sons, no daughters). The Brantley family followed the same migration route as the Womack family - from Isle of Wight/Southampton Cos, VA, to Halifax Co, NC, to Chatham Co, NC. Spencer Brantley, William Wommack's father-in-law, was part of this Brantley family, and he moved to Washington Co, GA. Given the connections between the Womack and Brantley families in Washington Co, GA, and that an Alexander was named as a son of Brittain Womack in his estate papers in Chatham Co, NC, and that William Wommack's father was Alexander (as proved by GA Land Lottery records, and deed records of Henry Co, GA), and two of Alexander's children named sons "Wiley Alexander", I am reasonably sure that Alexander Womack was the son of Brittain Womack, Sr. Wiley Womack, another son of Brittain Womack, Sr, has been proposed as the father of William Wommack of Washington Co, GA, but Wiley has records in Wake Co, NC which prove he was there as late as 1830.
