Moore Co, NC was formed in 1784 from Cumberland Co, NC
1850 Census Identification See Womack Genealogy Newsletter, VOL. III, NO. 1 - JUNE 1959. Brittain (or Britton) Womack, Jr was the son of Brittain Womack, Sr (also known as "Albridgton"). See Chatham Co, NC for more on Brittain Womack, Sr, including an attempt to sort out the various Brittain Womacks. From the newsletter article, Brittain Womack of Moore Co, NC (sister of Martha Womack Elkins) declared in 1843 that he was 76, thus born circa 1767. There is a marriage of "Britain Womack" to "Lucy Williford" on 21 Aug 1816 in Wake, Co, NC, but I belive this was Brittain Womack, Sr, shortly before he died; see Chatham Co, NC for more info. There is a marriage record of "Britain Wamock" to "Hamer Bluher" on 5 Feb 1807 in Cumberland Co, NC, with "Willes Oliver" and "Rudolph Battle" as bondsmen. This was probably Brittain Womack, Jr, since two Willis Olivers (Jr and Sr) lived very near Brittain in the 1800 and 1810 censuses of Moore Co, NC. "Hamer" is likely a misreading of "Hanner", which is an illiterate spelling of "Hannah", need to the actual marriage record. Her surname, "Bluher" is tougher since it does not seem to be an actual surname used anywhere in the area. There were some Blew/Blue families in the early censuses of Moore Co, NC. James Ballard, who lived near Brittain Womack in Moore Co, NC in 1800 and 1810, moved to Taliaferro Co, GA where he died in 1826 and left a will mentioning son-in-law "Britton Womack" (but not the name of his daughter who married Brittain, need to see the full will, as well as any estate documents). So, possibly "Bluher" is a really bad misreading of Ballard, or possibly Hannah married a Blue man first, and after his death married Brittain Womack. Brittain Womack, Jr was married before he married Hannah in 1807. His first wife may have been Elizabeth Elkins. Researchers of Brittain's son, James Womack/Wammack have his mother as Elizabeth LNU, no documentation. Frederick Elkins made his will on 7 Nov 1796 in Cumberland Co, NC; he apparently had no children of his own, since he left his estate to the children of Joshua Elkins and Owen Elkins, Joshua and Owen presumably the brothers of Frederick. "Bedy Warmack" is named as a daughter of "Owins Elkins", and "Britain Warmack" is a witness to the will. Joshua Elkins married Martha "Patsey" Womack, older sister of Brittain Womack, Jr. So, possibly, Brittain Womack, Jr married Elizabeth Elkins, who would have been the niece of Joshua Elkins/Martha Womack. James Womack/Wammack, see Wright Co, MO for more info. Researchers of this family have father as "Burton Wammack" (a misreading of Britan in the 1820 Census), and his mother as Elizabeth LNU. No source given for James's mother being named Elizabeth. See WorldConnect Database: George Washington Hall (this external link worked as of 3 Jul 2006), search for James Wammack, spouse Sarah Gunter. James Womack was in Moore Co, NC in 1820 and 1830; in Lincoln Co, TN in 1840; in Wright Co, MO in 1850; and in Webster Co, MO in 1860. According to this and other WorldConnect databases, James Womack married Sarah Gunter, daughter of John Gunter, Jr. In the 1850 Census James and Sarah were both 56, and in the 1860 Census, they were both 63. James was two lines from Brittain in the 1820 Census, and he fits with the male in Brittain Womack's household in 1800 (age 0-9) and 1810 (age 10-15); enough evidence to believe James was the son of Brittain. James had a great-grandson named Johnny Britton Womack (Johny Britton > Mitrell R > Charles Rufus > James > Brittain > Brittain) William Womack/Wommack, see Marion Co, GA for more info. William son of Brittain was one of the two William Womacks who married daughters of John Sheppard; daughters Nancy (21 Sep 1800) and Elizabeth (25 Feb 1805) both married men named William Womack; I believe the William who married Elizabeth Sheppard was the son of Brittain. Based purely on an analysis of the numbers in the household, the William Womack listed next to Brittain Womack in the 1830 Census of Moore Co, NC was the William who married Elizabeth Sheppard. William Womack/Nancy Sheppard apparently had no children prior to 1830, and may not have married until shortly after 1830; whereas William Womack/Elizabeth Sheppard had two sons (Elijah John and Robert Andrew) and two daughters (Nancy Milla and Nellie) who were born before the 1830 Census; this agrees with the numbers for William Womack in the 1830 Census of Moore Co, NC. The relationship between the two William Womacks is currently unknown, but they were very likely cousins, so the William who married Nancy Sheppard was likely the son of Wiley, William, or Meredith Womack. No direct proof that William Womack who married Elizabeth Sheppard was the son of Brittain Womack, just the fact he was listed next to Brittain in the 1830 Census. William Womack who married Elizabeth Sheppard, and who was probably son the of Brittain, was born born c1801: age 20-29 in 1830 Census of Moore Co, NC; age 30-39 in 1840 Census of Marion Co, GA; age 48 in 1850 Census of Marion Co, GA; age 60 in 1860 Census of Coosa Co, AL. see http://archiver.rootsweb.com/th/read/NCORANGE/1998-08/0903883318 - mentions of Womack (various spellings), Ballard, Oliver, Sheppard, etc. 1790 Census, p.43 (handwritten p.154, second column) James Ballard - 22400 [Brittain's future father-in-law] 1800 Census, p.64 (stamped page numbers) John Gunter Junr (10010/20020) [father of Sarah Gunter, who married James Womack, son of Brittain] 1800 Census, p.67-8 (stamped page numbers) Willis Oliver Senr and Willis Oliver Junr about 12 households before Brittain Womack [one of these was the bondsman for Brittain's marriage.] *** these next three households in a row *** James Ballard (01101/00000/1 slave) [Brittain's future father-in-law] Brittan Wammack (10010/10100) John Shephard Junr (20010/20010) [father of Elizabeth Shepard, who married William Womack, son of Brittain] Breakdown of Brittain Womack's 1800 household:
1810 Census, p.620 (handwritten number) Brittain Wommock (31010/01010) John Sheppard (John Shepherd - 22011/32010) right before Brittain; James Ballard (Jas Ballard - 00001/00001) 3 households before; Willis Oliver 4 households before p.621 (handwritten number) - about 5th line down, enumerator wrote "Britan Womak" and drew a line through it (apparently he realized he had already enumerated Brittain's family), no numbers. Breakdown of Brittain Womack's 1810 household:
1820 Census, p.317 Brittan Wormock (221101/20110) James Wormock (000100/00100) [two housholds after Brittain] Breakdown of Brittain Womack's 1820 household:
See Wright Co, MO for a breakdown of James Womack's family in 1820. 1880 Census, Moore Co, NC - Delila Buchanan, age 64, wife of William, believe her maiden name was Womack. Delila (Womack) Buchanan appears in censuses in Moore Co, NC from 1850 through 1880. In household in 1880 is "Cathren Womack", age 43, listed as "sister". Catherine was probably at least 50 in 1880, given that her age in 1850 was 20. Catherine also living with the Buchanan family in 1850 and 1860, though in 1850 she was listed as Catherine Buchanan, unknown where Catherine Womack was in 1870; she apparently never married. There is a Britton Buchanan (born about 1905) in the 1910 and 1920 Censuses of Harnett Co, NC; Britton Buchanan was the son of Harvey E Buchanan and Carolina LNU; Harvey E Buchanan was the son of James B(Britton?) Buchanan and Sophia LNU; James B Buchanan was the son of William Buchanan and Delila Womack. North Carolina birth records have William Britton Buchanan, son of Harvey Edgar Buchanan, born in Harnett Co, NC, no dates. The Britton name, and the proximity of Delila and Catherine to other Womacks associated with Brittain, are reason to believe that Delila and Catherine were daughters of Brittain Womack, Jr. In the 1850 Census, the oldest child of William Buchanan and Delila Womack was 9, so either they married soon after the 1840 Census, or they were already married but were missed by the enumerator.
