Mystery Troutmans

Back to Main Troutman Family Page.

First Revision: 13 Oct 1998

The following are Troutmans born before 1850 and mentioned in North Carolina civil and church records. Not all are necessarily Troutmans by blood; some of the women may have been the wives or widows of male Troutmans. There are several mystery Troutmans in the records of Organ Lutheran Church in Rowan County, North Carolina, and these are covered at the bottom of this page.

Alexander Troutman (Cabarrus Co, NC Court Records, 23 Jan 1822)
Alexander (c1806) is believed to be the son of Andrew (c1783).

Andrew Troutman (1778 Tax List of Rowan Co, NC)
Andrew (c1752) was a son of Peter (1716) who died before 1792 with no known children.

Barbary Troutman (married William Voils 30 Oct 1810, Cabarrus Co, NC Marriage records)
Barbara may have been Barbara (Cancellor) Troutman, widow of Henry Troutman (c1782).

Elizabeth Troutman (obituary in newspaper Carolina Watchman, issue of 24 Feb 1857)
Elizabeth was either Elizabeth Troutman (1807), daughter of Michael Troutman (c1782), or she was Elizabeth (Doland) Troutman, widow of Lawrence Troutman (1802).

Joshua Troutman (1810 Census, Rowan Co, NC)
"Joshua Troutman" was in fact George Troutman (c1782).

Josiah Troutman (in newspaper article, Western Carolinian, issue of 23 Sep 1825
Josiah was an African-American Troutman, most likely a slave.

Martin Troutman (1810 Census, Rowan Co, NC)
"Martin Troutman" was in fact Martin Trantham. See the sketch on George Troutman (c1782) for more info on how Martin Trantham was listed as Martin Troutman.

Milly Troutman (married David Casper 19 May 1851, Rowan Co, NC Marriage records)
Milly was probably Amelia Troutman (1816), daughter of Michael Troutman (c1782)

Mystery Troutmans in the records of Organ Lutheran Church, Rowan County, North Carolina

The Organ Lutheran records have many mistakes, probably as a result of being hand-copied several times over the years. The records between 1818 and 1826 are especially troublesome. Whoever copied these records did not copy the date of baptism or the name of the sponsor, unlike the records before and after this period. Several names got badly mangled. Also, people who have attempted to transcribe the Organ Lutheran records have made several mistakes. These records are in chronological order.

Jacobus Troutman (__ Nov 1810), child of Andrew Troutman
This was most likely James Troutman (c1810), son of Andrew (1784).

Lewis Troutman (26 Nov 1813), child of George Troutman
Lewis was a misreading of Levi Troutman (1813), son of George (c1782).

Charles Troutman (14 Jun 1819), child of Jacob Troutman
"Charles Troutman" was in fact Mary Ann "Polly" Troutman (1819), daughter of Jacob Troutman (1788). How she came to be listed as Charles is a mystery, but it is true. See sketch of Jacob (1788) for more info.

Jacob Troutman (14 Nov 1819), child of Adam Troutman
This Jacob seems to be sdome kind of mistake, since Adam Troutman (1768) had a living son named Jacob, Jacob Troutman (1797).

Henry Andrew Troutman (__ Aug 1819), child of Jacob Ernhart
This was not a Troutman at all, but an Earnhardt. His full name was Henry Andrew Troutman Earnhardt, son of Jacob Earnhardt, who was very possibly a son of Phillip Earnhardt and Margaret Troutman (1759), daughter of Peter Troutman (1716).

Juli Troutman (11 Feb 1821), child of Catherine Troutman
Juli Troutman is a mystery. One possible explanation is that she was in fact Juliann Culp, daughter of Peter Culp and Catherine Troutman (c1787), and somehow she was listed by her mother's maiden instead of Culp. Catherine (c1787), daughter of Peter (c1761), married Peter Culp in 1819 and their daughter Juliann was born between 1820 and 1825.

Eli Troutman (3 Mar 1826), child of Jacob Troutman
Eli was Jacob Eli Troutman (1826), son of Jacob Troutman (1788).

Chris Reb Troutman (31 May 1828), child of Jacob Troutman
Chris Reb has been assumed to be a boy in some genealogies I have seen, but was in fact a girl, Christina "Crissee" Rebecca Troutman (1828), daughter of Jacob Troutman (1788).

Sarah Mar. Troutman (20 Jun 1830), child of Christine Troutman
This was Sarah Mariah Troutman (20 Jun 1813), daughter of Jacob Troutman (1788). Jacob (1788) died 13 Sep 1829, leaving his widow, Christina (Walcher) Troutman, pregnant with their last child, Sarah Mariah (1830).

Chatrin Troutman (14 Apr 1836), child of D. Troutman
Chatrin is a misreading of Catherine Troutman (1836), daughter of David Troutman (1808). "Chatrin" seems to a common misinterpretation of the name "Catherine," since I have seen this in a few other places.

Noaran Lock Troutman (13 Oct 1836), child of John and Elizabeth Troutman
"Noaran Lock" was a misreading of Noah Lock, Noah Benjamin Lock Troutman (1836), son of John Troutman (c1809) and Mary Elizabeth Ritchie.

Perantaq Maria Troutman (27 Mar 1837), child of Peter Troutman
This was Purity Mariah Troutman, daughter of Peter Troutman (c1761).

Nalla Troutman (30 Dec 1839), child of David and Catherine Troutman
This was Eleanor Troutman (1839), daughter of David Troutman (1808) and Catherine Earnhardt. "Nalla" is a misreading of "Nelly."

Harma Troutman (6 Mar 1840), child of John and Elizabeth Troutman
This was Amy Troutman (1840), daughter of John Troutman (1801) and Elizabeth Troutman (1799).

Ryah Troutman (1 May 1842), child of John and Elizabeth Troutman
This was Mariah Troutman (1842), daughter of John Troutman (1801) and Elizabeth Troutman (1799).

Mele Ann Troutman (5 Feb 1847), child of George Troutman
This was Mary Amelia Ann Troutman (1847), daughter of George Troutman (1802).

James Rufus Troutman (7 Nov 1850), child of John and G.C. Troutman
James Rufus Troutman (1850) was not the son of "John and G.C. Troutman." His parents were George Troutman (1823) and Sophia Caroline Yost. Somehow, "George" was misread as "John" and "S.C." (for Sophia Caroline) as "G.C."
