In the late 1800s, Gaylord, his young wife Tillie, and his father left Allegan Co, MI and settled in Luce Co, MI. There Gaylord and his family built and operated a general store/post office/inn at the spot on the map called Helmer, MI. The building (Helmer House) still stands today as a state historic site and is operated as a restaurant/bed and breakfast.
