| Q: | How do you feel about the on going Census Project seat vacancy and what would you do to fix this problem? |
| A: | I support amending the bylaws to remove the requirement for a Census Project seat on the Board. Over a year ago the Board took a big step toward reconciliation by providing links to the two census projects. I hoped that one or both of these projects might respond with similar steps and that would lead to a resolution. That has not happened and is not likely to. |
Q: | How do you feel about the Archives trademark and also the new disclaimer that they have with them? |
| A: | I think the Archives service mark protects the Archives. Nothing wrong with that. The "new" disclaimer is not new. It has been around for some time. I think what they are trying to say is that while they have permission from the submitters to post the information, that's all they have. They do not have the right to extend that permission to other people, that right remains with the submitter.

Q: | Should our project incorporate? |
| A: | I do not favor incorporation, at this time. I do realize that at some future time incorporation, or some other form of organization than we have now, might be of benefit to The Project. Before any change like that could happen, there would need to be a financial plan to pay for it and at the same time preserve our mission and spirit; there would need to be a structural plan to protect an individual CC's rights to ownership of their material; there would need to much discussion and consultation to iron out all the other wrinkles involved with any kind of change. It would also require a vote by the members.

Q: | Why do so many CCs put their county pages on Rootsweb? |
| A: | RootsWeb offers quality service--free. No wonder CCs gravitate to RootsWeb. Also, using WSFTP, uploading pages is a snap. My county site is on RootsWeb. There is rarely a problem accessing it, and when someone writes to me saying, "I have this great thing for you to post, if you have room," the answer is always "Yes."
The USGenWeb Project has always had a positive relationship with Rootsweb. No only do they supply us web space, but when the USGenWeb.com domain name was for sale, they bought it and gave it to us.
That certainly doesn't mean that RootsWeb does everything right. The consolidation of the RootsWeb and Ancestry Boards was a mess. The search engine for county sites has never worked well. I finally switched to Pico. They provide an excellent free service without intrusive advertising. But, as I am reminded every time I run a new page through the validator: none of us is perfect.

Q: | What does the Board discuss in secret on BOARD-EXEC? Why dose the Board need secret meetings? |
| A: | A closed or executive session is a meeting open only to members of the assembly in which sensitive or confidential matters may be discussed and acted upon. The Board needs a place to discuss personnel matters, grievances, pending legal problems and other matters of a highly sensitive nature. The BOARD-EXEC list serves that purpose.
Proceedings in executive session are confidential and I would strictly enforce that confidentiality. BOARD-EXEC is simply a tool that is available to help the Board accomplish its business. There is nothing unusual or clandestine about it.
