Generation One

1. Daniel SOESBE was born on 13 April 1755 in Pennsylvania.1 He married Rachel BIRCHAM, daughter of John BIRCHAM and Susannah Unknown, on 15 April 1781 in the church at, Washington, Pennsylvania; ceremony performed by Mr. Wood, a Baptist minister.2 He died on 4 March 1841 in Vigo, Indiana, at age 85.3,4 He was buried in Hull Cemetery, Grave 4, Lot 70, Sec. 4, Honey Creek, Vigo, Indiana.5

He began military service in September 1776 in Washington, Washington, Pennsylvania, enlisting in Sept. 1776 while residing near Red Stone, an old fort, afterwards called Brownville, Pennsylvania. Daniel Soesbe served as a private in Capt. Van Sweringen's company, Col. Mackey's Pennsylvania Regiment. He was in the battle of Boundbrook. After this, the company was attached to Col. Morgan's Rifle Regiment, and was engaged in the Campaign of 1777 and was at the taking of Burgoyne. In the spring of 1778, they marched to Ft. Pitt, where they joined Gen. McIntosh's expedition against the western indians. He was stationed at Ft. Laurens for three months under Capt. Finley, and was discharged Sept. 7, 1779.6 He removed to Shelby, Kentucky, in 1789 with his brother, Thomas.7,8 He appeared on the census of 1820 in Sullivan (later Greene), Indiana; he and wife over 45; others in the household were 1M 10-16, 1M 18-26, 2M 26-45, 1F 10-16, 2F 16-26; four members of the household were engaged in agriculture.9 He resided in 1826 in Honey Creek, Vigo, Indiana; and at this time was first recorded engaging in a land transaction. He entered land in Honey Creek, October 8 1816, according to one county history, but the record has not been found. Another history says he settled in the southeast part of Honey Creek about 1822.10 He appeared on the census of 1830 in Greene, Indiana; he 70-80, wife 60-70. Others enumerated in the household were 1M 5-10, 1M 10-15, 1M 20-30, 1 F 20-30.11 He appeared on the census of 1840 in Honey Creek, Vigo, Indiana; he and wife both over 80.12

Rachel BIRCHAM was born on 19 October 1765 in Virginia. She died on 8 February 1844 in Vigo, Indiana, at age 78.13,14 She was buried in Hull Cemetery, Grave 4, Lot 70, Sec. 4, Honey Creek, Vigo, Indiana.15

5. Daniel Soesbe (Daniel SOESBE) was born on 18 June 1789. He married Anna McKrosky in 1814 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana.39

He appeared on the census of 1830 in Vigo, Indiana; as "Sosby." He and wife were 30-40. In the household were 1M -5 (William, 5 ?), 1F -5, 3F 5-10 (Aseneth, 6 ?), 1F 10-15.40 He appeared on the census of 1840 in Honey Creek, Vigo, Indiana; no wife. With him were 1M 10-15 (William, 15 ?), 1F 15-20 (Aseneth, 16 ?).41 There is a Daniel Soresbe who married a Margaret Dodd in Vigo county, Indiana on 1 Aug 1842.42

6. Rachel Soesbe (Daniel SOESBE) was born on 19 October 1791.43 She married Hezekiah Harbert.

Hezekiah Harbert removed to Missouri a few years after the death of Rachel Soesbe, settling on a farm near the city of St. Joseph.44 He died between 1861 and 1865 in St. Joseph, Missouri.45

9. Samuel Soesbe (Daniel SOESBE) was born on 27 March 1797 in Montgomery, Kentucky.47,48 He married Eleanor Shintaffer, daughter of Phillip Shintaffer and Ann Butler, on 3 October 1823 in Greene, Indiana; Marriage record says "Soesby" and "Shirtaffer."49 He married Mary Ann Unknown. He died on 15 November 1881 in Mechanicsville, Cedar, Iowa, at age 84.50 He was buried in Pioneer Grove Cemetery, Mechanicsville, Cedar, Iowa.51

On 17 August 1824 the following appeared in the Terre Haute newspaper: "Whereas my wife Eleanor has left my bed and board without any just provocation; this is therefore to forbid all persons from harboring or trusting her on my account, as I will pay no debts of her contracting, s/Samuel Soesbe.52 He appeared on the census of 1830; "Sosby." He 28-30 and wife 20-30. 1M -5, 1F -5.53 He removed to Iowa in 1839.54 He appeared on the census of 21 September 1850 in Pioneer, Cedar, Iowa; farmer, real estate=$5000.55 He appeared on the census of 1870 in Fremont, Cedar, Iowa; real estate=$1380, personal estate=$355. Enumerated with the family were Hutchinson Fuller, 35, New Hampshire, farmer; Clifford A. Todd, Iowa; and, Alvilda Todd, 9, Iowa.56 He and Mary Ann Unknown appeared on the census of 1880 in Pioneer, Cedar, Iowa; farmer, his parents born in Pennsylvania, her parents in Connecticut.57

Eleanor Shintaffer was born circa 1807 in Ohio.58,59 She died in 1850.60

Mary Ann Unknown was born circa 1814 in Connecticutt.68

11. William SOESBE (Daniel) was born on 21 July 1801 in Bath, Kentucky; family bible says his birthdate is 1801; obituary says 1806. The age given in various censuses would indicate 1806 is correct.69 He married Angeline Julina BUCKNER, daughter of James M. BUCKNER and LaVina Susanah WEST, in 1831 in Vigo, Indiana.70 He died on 28 October 1880 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa, at age 79.71

He and Angeline Julina BUCKNER removed to Burlington, Des Moines, Iowa, in 1841 moving the next year to Mechanicsville, in Cedar county, and in 1843 to Jones county.72 He and Angeline Julina BUCKNER appeared on the census of 1 October 1850 in Greenfield, Jones, Iowa; William, 44, farmer, real estate=$500; Angeline, 35. At home were Nancy J., 17; Rebecca A., 14; Rachel A., 12; Thomas M., 9; Samuel W., 6; John W., 3.73 He appeared on the census of 1852 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; 5 males, 4 females, 1 voter, 1 militia.74 He appeared on the census of 1854 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; 4 males, 3 females, 1 voter, 1 militia.75 He appeared on the census of 1856 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; Wm. Living with the family was Alice Wagoner, 15, granddaughter, in school.78

Angeline Julina BUCKNER was born on 23 January 1814 in Green, Kentucky.79 She and Rose Sigmond appeared on the census of 1895 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa; Angeline, from "Canady," Methodist and Rose Soesbe, 29, widow, born in Linn county.80 She died on 11 March 1895 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa, at age 81.81 She was buried in Riverside Cemetery, Anamosa, Jones, Iowa.82

13. Aseneth Soesbe (Daniel, Daniel SOESBE) was born on 23 January 1824 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana.96 She married Robert Park Stuart on 4 May 1847 in Vigo, Indiana.97

14. William F. Soesbe (Daniel, Daniel SOESBE) was born circa 1825 in Indiana.99 He married Christina M. Bodenhofer, daughter of Jacob Bodenhofer and Elizabeth Unknown, on 15 June 1848 in Jones, Iowa; official, Nelson Rathburn.100

16. Soloman Harbert (Rachel Soesbe, Daniel SOESBE) was born on 4 November 1819 in Greenville, Floyd, Indiana.109 He married Amadine Amanda Watson.110 He died on 17 May 1890 in Irving Park (Chicago), Cook, Illinois, at age 70.111

In 1844 in Vigo, Indiana, was executor for Grandmother Rachel Soesbe's will.112 He was biography Soloman Harbert was an infant when his mother died, and was raised in the home of his maternal grandparents, Daniel and Rachel Soesbe. He was educated in public schools of Terre Haute, Indiana. He taught school there for a time, then became involved in real estate. In 1867 he went to Des Moines, Iowa, where he continued in that business and in 1873 he moved to Chicago, living first in Evanston and after 1886 in Irving Park. He was a member of the Baptist church and for 40 years served as deacon. He gave little attention to politics, but took considerable interest in temperance and other philanthropic work.113

18. William Soesbe (Samuel, Daniel SOESBE) was born circa 1829 in Indiana.119,120 He married Minerva Impson on 27 May 1852.121 He died before 1880; his wife was enumerated as a widow in the 1880 census. He was buried in Pleasant Hill Pioneer Grove, Mechanicsville, Cedar, Iowa.122

He and Minerva Impson appeared on the census of 20 July 1870 in Fremont, Cedar, Iowa; teamster, real estate=$200, personal estate=$425. At home were Elizabeth, Henry, William, Charity, Melinda & Viola.123

Minerva Impson was also known as Empson Hazel Hamon says "Empson."124 She was born circa 1834 in Ohio.125,126 She appeared on the census of 1880; "does housework, " apparently widow, father born VT, mother born VA. Viola & Cora at home.127

19. Philip Soesbe (Samuel, Daniel SOESBE) was born on 18 June 1830 in Green, Indiana.137,138,139 He married an unknown person. He died on 15 July 1902 at age 72.140

Enumerated with the family was Harriet Hally, 28, Wisconsin.148 In Lincoln, Shelby, Iowa, Dan Soesbe is listed as a Pioneer of Lincoln Township.149 In 1874 in Shelby, Iowa, "D. Soesbe" is listed as one of the judges at the county fair for "the line of manufactured articles, premiums were offered for the best farm wagon, spring wagon, washing machine, clothes wringer, heavy harness, saddle, corn broom."150 In 1877 in Shelby, Iowa, "The officers of the fair were: ... D. Soesbe."151 He appeared on the census of 29 June 1880 in Lincoln, Shelby, Iowa; Daniel, 46, farmer; Harriet, 43, keeping house, father born Connecticut, mother New York. At home were Joseph, 21, farmer; Isie J., 18, housework; Nellie, 13, housework; Carrie, 8; Birt, 3.152

Nancy Jane SOESBE (William, Daniel) was born on 3 May 1833 in Vigo, Indiana.165 She married John Wesley Wagoner on 12 October 1852 in Jones, Iowa.166 She married Benjamin HARRISON, son of Henry HARRISON and Susannah TALLMAN, on 23 October 1864 in the home of William Soulsby (Soesbe), Fairview, Jones, Iowa.167 She married William P. Briggs on 7 July 1879 in Home of bride, Anamosa, Fairview, Jones, Iowa. She died on 5 February 1904 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa, at age 70; Burial at Riverside Cemetery.168

She and John Wesley Wagoner appeared on the census of 1856 in Jones, Iowa; Wagoner; 26, farmer; 10 years in Iowa; N. She was recorded as having 6 births and 6 children living.174

John Wesley Wagoner was also known as Waggoner in Nancy Soesbe's obituary.175 He was born circa 1829 in Indiana.176 He died on 23 April 1862 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa.177

At home were Lucy 11, Matilda 7, John 5, Henry 3, Huldy 0.185 He resided in 1856 in Prairieburg, Boulder, Linn, Iowa; "At that time, B. Harrison lived one mile east."186 He and Jane Jeffries appeared on the census of 6 July 1860 in Boulder, Linn, Iowa; Benjamin, 39, farmer, real estate=$1560, personal estate=$500; Jane, 36. At home were Ellen 15, Matilda 11, John 9, Henry 8, Huldah J. 6, & Samuel 3. Ellen, Matilda, John & Henry attended school. Also enumerated in the household was Henry Wagner, 17, Pennsylvania. He was likely from the household 2 doors away: John (42, b. Pennsylvania) and Sarah (36, b. Indiana), their oldest child at home was 16, b. Pennsylvania.187 He died on 23 July 1876 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa, at age 55; "Mr. Benj. Harrison, living between Anamosa and Fairview, has been suffering for years from an affliction of the knee and finally ulceration set in. After a consultation of physicians an amputation of the leg was determined upon as affording the only hope of prolonging life. Accordingly a week ago last Wednesday Dr. Stoddart, assisted by Drs. Adair, McLean and Eaton, performed the operation, but the strength of Mr. Harrison gave way and he died the following Sabbath. His age was 56 years." The Anamosa Eureka, Thursday, July 27, 1876.188 He was buried on 25 July 1876 in Center Cemetery, Morley, Jones, Iowa.

William P. Briggs married Unknown Unknown. He married Mary A. Unknown on 28 December 1889 in C. W. Brown residence, Jones, Iowa. He was born circa 1832 in Ohio.189 He appeared on the census of 1885 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; Laborer, divorced, living alone.190 He appeared on the census of 1895 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; Farmer, Christian.191

There were no children of Nancy Jane SOESBE and William P. Briggs.

27. Rebecca A. Soesbe (William SOESBE, Daniel) was born on 28 November 1835 in Vigo, Indiana; LDS #1621453. She married Jacob Frederick Bodenhofer, son of George Gotlieb Bodenhofer Jr. and Mary Haddock, on 27 September 1855 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa; J J Huber, Minister.192 She died on 6 January 1898 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa, at age 62.193

She and Jacob Frederick Bodenhofer appeared on the census of 18 June 1860 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; J. F., 28, farmer, personal estate=$245; R. A., 24. At home were E. A., 3, & C. W., 1.194 She and Jacob Frederick Bodenhofer appeared on the census of 1880; Angie, Charles, Eva, George, John, Fredrick at home.195 She and Jacob Frederick Bodenhofer appeared on the census of 1885 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; Plasterer. George, John and Frederick at home.196 She and Jacob Frederick Bodenhofer appeared on the census of 1895 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; farmer, religion: none, served in Co. F, Reg. 13, Infantry; Rebecca's religion: Baptist. Fred at home.197

Jacob Frederick Bodenhofer was born on 22 October 1828 in Ohio; Minnie Putnam says born 1832.198,199,200 He appeared on the census of 1900 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; Widower, lived with son, Fredrick. Fathe born Germany; mother, Virginia.201 He died on 16 December 1903 at age 75; Hammon says died 5 Oct 1909, but this is the date that his cousin Jacob Joseph Bodenhofer died.202,203

Children of Rebecca A. Soesbe and Jacob Frederick Bodenhofer were as follows:

28. Rachel Ann Soesbe (William SOESBE, Daniel) was born circa 1838 in Vigo, Indiana.213 She married Nathaniel Brundidge, son of Maston Brundidge and Mary A. Mead, on 25 August 1856 in Jones, Iowa; C M Sessions, Minister. Her name listed as "Sosely," his as "Burrdize."214

Nathaniel Brundidge was born on 27 April 1836 in New York.215,216

Children of Rachel Ann Soesbe and Nathaniel Brundidge were as follows:

30. Samuel W. Soesbe (William SOESBE, Daniel) was born on 24 September 1844 in Iowa.218 He married Ella L. Newell.219 He died in 1893 in Greene, Butler, Iowa; of tuberculosis.220,221

He appeared on the census of 1 August 1870 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; 24, carpenter, living with parents.222 He removed to Greene, Iowa, circa 1871 He became an attorney prior to 1878. In 1878 he formed a law partnership with his brother, Edwin William. Along with J. B. Shepardson, they opened the bank of Soesbe and Shepardson & Co., in 1883.223 He was a one-time State Senator who introduced the bill to fly the flag over all schools.224

Ella L. Newell resided on 2 February 1904 in Greene, Butler, Iowa; a widow.225

31. John W. Soesbe (William SOESBE, Daniel) was born on 22 August 1847 in Iowa.231 He married Mattie Williams on 27 September 1874 in Jones, Iowa; witness was E. Sockmore, official R. H. Ingram.232 He died on 2 January 1890 in Anamosa, Jones, Iowa, at age 42.233 He was buried on 4 January 1890 in Riverside Cemetery, Anamosa, Jones, Iowa.234

He appeared on the census of 1 August 1870 in Fairview, Jones, Iowa; 22, brick maker, living with parents.235 He kept a grocery store in Des Moines.236 According to Minnie Putnam's notes, her name was Mattie Williams and she was a widow with one child, Nellie Ambrose James, when she married John. Most likely, Mattie Williams married, first, Ambrose and had daughter Nellie (who married a James) and, second, John Soesbe.237 Hammon says John married Rose Sigmond.238

32. Edwin William Soesbe (William SOESBE, Daniel) was born on 11 November 1851 in Jones, Iowa. He married Carrie Lucretia Cross on 19 February 1879 in Jones, Iowa. He died on 22 February 1904 in Greene, Butler, Iowa, at age 52; may be 23 February.240

He resided in 1898 in Greene, Butler, Iowa.241

39. Charles Francis Soesbe (William, Daniel, Daniel SOESBE) was born on 15 January 1877 in Illinois; Don Soesbe was informed by his uncle, Keith Soesbe, that Keith's grandparents were William Soesbe and Christina Bodenhofer.246 He married Isabel Brown.247 He died on 15 August 1937 in Oregon at age 60.248

40. Lucinda Harbert (Soloman, Rachel Soesbe, Daniel SOESBE) was born on 21 October 1846 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana.249 She married John Mahan on 28 February 1865.250 She and John Mahan were divorced on 19 December 1866.251 She married William Henry Clark on 2 May 1870.252,253 She died in 1880.254

William Soesbe Harbert (Soloman, Rachel Soesbe, Daniel SOESBE) was born on 17 September 1842 in Terre Haute, Vigo, Indiana.256 He married Elizabeth Morrison Boynton on 18 October 1870 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery, Indiana.257,258 He died on 24 March 1919 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, at age 76.259

William Harbert located his practice in Des Moines, Iowa, but removed to Chicago in 1874. His practice was chiefly directed to the areas of corporations, land-titles and general chancery,. He believed in municipal control of utilities, assisted in the establishment of a Juvenile Court, the adoption of the indeterminate sentencing law, and advocated placing of a limitation on the power of grant, by will, of large sums to single individuals. In 1906 he moved his family, including his adult daughters to Pasadena, California. While there he consturcted the Holly Hotel and served on several Pasadena water boards. In handwritten notes concerning his life he declared: "Have no special honors. Have tried to be a good citizen and honorable lawyer, a considerate husband & father. It I attain these points I will be content."260 He began military service on 14 August 1862 as a 1st Sgt. in Company C of the 85th Regiment, Indiana Volunteer Infantry in the Union Army. He was discharged 12 June 1865 with the rank of 1st Lieutenant.261 He attended M in 1867; the University of Michigan and recieved his law degree.

Elizabeth Morrison Boynton was born on 15 April 1843 in Crawfordsville, Montgomery, Indiana.262 She died on 19 January 1925 in Pasadena, Los Angeles, California, at age 81.263 She was biography Elizabeth M. Boynton graduated from Terre Haute Female College in 1862. She published her first book, "The Golden Fleece." in 1867; her second, "Out of Her Sphere," in 1871. She was very active in the women's suffrage movement and received and honorary Ph. D. from Cincinnati Wesleyan College.
