3. John FULLFORD. Son of Thomas FULLFORD & Mary Anna TUDOR. Born 9 Nov 1848 in Rockwood Precinct, Randolph County, Illinois. Died 27 Sep 1916.

From a book on the history of Randolph County . . .

John "obtained his education in the district school near his home, and being reared to farm pursuits, spent his entire life following that occupation. His elder brother, Thomas, died in infancy, leaving John heir to his father's numerous estates, comprising both farm land and city real estate. He was a man of influence in his community and was numbered among the successful men of Randolph County."

"In political matters, Mr. Fullford was a Republican in the national elections, but in local affairs reserved the right to vote for the best man, irrespective of party."

John Fullford and Mary Jane Turner were married by Rev. M. House, Minister of the Gospel.

John Fullford is listed as a life member of VFW Kaskaskia Post 3553, Chester.

He married Mary Jane TURNER, daughter of John/Charles TURNER, 2 May 1877 in Rockwood, IL. Born 27 Aug 1852 in Baton Rouge, Louisiana. Died 7 Apr 1926 in Rockwood, IL. Buried in Fulford Cemetery, Rockwood, IL.

The following is from an obituary published in HeraldTribune, Thursday, April 15, 1926. This was sent toMrs. Arthur Fulford by Wayne Gomez of Ft. Lauderdale, Florida (a possible distant relative doing family research).

"Mary Jane Turner was born in Adams County, Mississippi near the city of Natchez, August 27, 1852, and died at her home in Springvale, Rockwood, Illinois, April 7, 1926, at the age of 73 years, 7 months and 11 days.  We know but little of her people.  Her father died of measles in the Confederate Army. She lived with her aunt, Mrs. Mollie Malone. When she was quite young, she came north during the seige of Vicksburg, when the country was being overrun by contending armies.

"May 2, 1877, she was married to John Fulford of Rockwood Precinct, Randolph County, Illinois, where they lived the rest of their lives. He preceded her in death September 27, 1916. To this union were born eight children. Grace, who was married to Peter Partridge; Lydia, wife of Will Johnson of Mt. Summit, Rockwood; Jewett, who married Lottie Mansker; Ruby, wife of John Tindall, both living on Chester Road; Ebba, wife of Charlie Rader of Cora; Ida, wife of Clyde Kirk of Chester; Florence, wife of August Spinner of Cutler; and Earl, who married Grace Hindmanand lived close to the old home.

"The oldest girl, Grace, passed on before February 27, 1916. There lives to rejoice in her memory the seven remaining children with their husbands and wives, 32 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, with numbers of other relatives and friends.

"In 1907, when Brother Cartright was holding revival services, she united with Mt. Summit Christian Church and held to her faith till the end.

"She was a loving mother, an obliging kind neighbor. Faithful and loving, she was rewarded by teh love and respect of the neighborhood. Such a life is like that of Abel, "who being dead, yet speaketh" for a sacred >and holy memory and example remains to bless her circle of loved ones.

"The funeral was at the house. Brother Bagwill, a long time friend of the family, now Chaplain to the prison, held the service, assisted by our minister, Brother Taylor. She was buried in the family plot in Spring Vale Cemetery. The sermon text was Martha's words to Mary, "The Master is come and calleth for thee."

Wayne Gomez thinks Mary Jane's mother may have been Emily Gibson.
