How Fullford lost an "L" - story from Ruby Fulford

Jewett's father, John Fullford was a wealthy man, with quite a lot of land, that he divided evenly among his children.  Jewett was the oldest son, and since his brother, Earl, was the baby of the family, Jewett ended up doing most of the work.  When John divided the land evenly among his children, Jewett was somewhat irked by this gesture, thinking he deserved the lion's share.  Jewett eventually went to the county courthouse to make the transaction legal and when he filled out the forms he chose to drop an "L" from his last name.  All he said was "the name sounds the same with one "L" or two - seems like the extra "L" isn't necessary, is it."

Jewett bought land that adjoined the land his father gave him for only $1,000 - its owner couldn't pay the backtaxes he owed the Bank of Steeleville, that's why Jewett got such a good price.

Jewett died of a stroke while baling hay.

He married Lottie MANSKER, daughter of Herman Cole MANSKER & Mary Catherine KINNISON. Born 16 Dec 1885. Died 22 Dec 1975.

After Jewett died, Lottie worked with the WPA (Work Projects of America). The WPA was established during the Depression - Lottie helped new mothers, making meals and keeping house.

After all the kids were grown and gone, Lottie moved to town, in the house across from the Chester high school.  To earn a living she baby sat and kept boarders.  Meanwhile her son, Art, and his wife, Ruby, lived at the old homeplace and tried to make a go of the farm.  Ruby worked at the shoe factor and Art and Ruby's son, Richard, was one of the children that Lottie babysat.
