Generation No. 1
1. ANTHONY HARKER (WILLIAM) was born
October 25, 1606 in Sibsey, England, and died March 1674/75 in Boston, MA. He married MARY MARGARET ???.
Notes for ANTHONY HARKER:
Came to Boston in 1633
on the Griffin in the employment (as a man servant) of Thomas Leverett and was
listed a member of First Church of Boston in the same year (And., RIII,
Holbrook). He took his oath of
allegiance and became a "freeman" under the charter of the
Massachusetts on 25 May 1636. He was
allotted land in Boston before 1636, but forfeited on 21 March 1636/7 for
failure to build on it. On 14 Dec.
1635, he was allotted eight acres. In
1645, the Boston Book of Possessions indicated that he owned one house and
garden (And). On 9 April 1649, he paid
6d. school tax on land he owned on Long Island. Boston tax records listed his occupation as a "corder of
wood" in March 1654/5 and March 1655/6.
He and his wife Mary were members of First Church in Boston for at least
20 years. He was listed as a yeoman*
on deed dated 23 March 1659/60, by which he sold his "old dwelling
house" and half of the adjacent land to Peter Vergoose (Vertigoose) of
Boston. On Jan. 12, 1662, he sold land to
Isaac Vertigoose, son of Peter, for 30.£
A deposition dated 29 July 1683, gave his age as "65 years or
thereabouts." On 13 February 1674,
he sold James Burroughs of Boston a parcel of land joining his dwelling in
Boston. In his will written 3/2/1675,
pr. 4/8/1675, he disinherited his son John for being "very disobedient
& rebellious," "a very bad husband," and "given to
drink and wastefully to spend both his precious time and monies." However, he did leave him 1s. He named his "eldest daughter Mary
Harker" executrix and gave her the responsibility to care for his wife
Mary, who was apparently suffering from Alzheimer's disease. An inventory of the estate taken on 2 April
1675 listed its value as £116 1s. 6d., of which the house accounted for £100
and the lot £12. Daughter Mary died
before 27 April 1680 and administration of the estate was granted to the
surviving daughters, "Sarah Browne, Mercy Evens, and Elizabeth
Street." (And.) The estate was
finally divided equally between them on 16 Sept. 1682, after an allowance of
£24 to Mercy Evans and Elizabeth Street for caring for their mother.
