"Pioneers of Southern Victoria" recorded James McNeil as born in 1826, a native (New Brunswick) of Irish descent, a farmer. He was a Farmer in 1851 in Andover NB.(77) (131) He resided Caribou ME in 1880. (21) US Census for Caribou ME in 1880 shows:

Ida, daughter, b. Sept 1898 He was a Hauler on 7 Apr 1898 in Caribou ME.(132) Acc. to the Aroostook County Republican of 7 April 1898, "Woodland reports James A. McNeal has made a record hard to beat. He commenced hauling for Jacob Hedman of Jemtland, Nov. 25, 1897, and up to March 30th, he had hauled with one pair of horses, 1045 M. shingles, 96 M long lumber, 32,940 cwt. freight and 10 tons starch. As a result Mr. McNeal has netted $226.55. All of the above produce has been hauled over a fifteen mile route to Caribou." He had a brother/sister named William Mcneil/McNeal born 1828 in Andover Parish, Victoria City, NB. (133)(131) (21)(134) The 1851 New Brunswick census and 1871 one as well seem to clearly establish the existence and relationship of three brothers -- James, William and Joseph.

"Pioneers of Southern Victoria" note that there were three McNeil's lodged with Margaret Donnelly in Andover Parish in 1851 -- William, born 1828; Joseph, born 1829, and Stephen, born 1831. Coincidentally, James named his children Stephen, Francis, William and Joseph. The research work went on to note the following:

"JOSEPH MCNEIL b. 1829, native Scot. Desc., Farmer, F. C. Bapt.; His wife, Lucy
A., b. 1841, native, Scot. Desc., F. C. Bapt.; Children: John M., b. 1861, George W. b. 1863, Joseph N. b. 1866, Harriet b. Feb. 1871."

"STEPHEN MCNEIL b. 1831 native, Scot Desc. Farmer, F. C. Bapt.; His wife Mary A., b. 1829, native, Scot. Descent, F. C. Bapt.; Children: Mary A. b. 1855,
James H. b. 1857, Stephen b. 1859, Matilda J. b. 1861, Harriet b. 1863,
Emeline b. 1865, Adila b. 1867, Reuben b. 1869."

Terry Gleason adds this note about Margaret Donnelly:

Margaret Donnelly was born in Ireland and married Stephen McNeil. He died (believed to be in 1829, but birth of son in 1831 would negate this date) and Margaret then married a Thomas Donnelly. She is buried in Bairdsville next to Stephen and Thomas.
1900 US Census for Caribou ME lists a William McNeal, b. Feb 1872, farm laborer; wife, Susan, b. Nov 1878; two children -- Grace, b. April 1897, and Herbert, Sept b. 1899.

Two doors down the street are Frank McNeal, farmer, b, Dec 1872; wife,
Zilphia, b. Jan 1877; two children -- Nellie, b. Dec 1896, and Ida, b. Sept 1898.

These may be grandsons of William or Joseph McNeal.

Significantly, next door to William and Susan are Michael Gallagher, farmer, b. Dec 1845, age 54, and three children -- Eva, b. 1882; Wilfred, b. Sept 1892, and Donald, b. June 1894. In the 1880 Census, Michael had a daughter, Zilphia, age 3 (b. 1877).

The 1900 US Census for Caribou also lists Joseph McNeil, farmer, b. May 1849, Maine; his wife, Elizabeth, b. March 1851 Canada, and 7 children, all born in Maine. Joseph and Elizabeth have been married for 12 years. The children are: Nora, b. July 1885; Norman (?), b. March 1887; Minnie, b. April 1889; Herman, b. March 1891; Addison, b. April 1893; Harvey, farm laborer, b. July 1878, and Jennie, house servant, b. Nov 1882.

He had a brother/sister named Joseph Mcneil/McNeal born 1829 in Andover Parish, Victoria City NB.(135) (134) Terry Gleason (<tpg@sst.ll.mit.edu>) reported the census data listing Joseph McNeal, born 1828, and Lucy (Lucis) Dane, born 1840, both born raised and married In NB. "1871 census places them in Bairdsville, Victory (Victoria?) City, NB"

"They are Scotch, farmers, and Baptists. Other census data says Lucy's parents from Ireland and England. Joseph's are Irish born. Joseph has brother, William, born 1830. William emigrates to Minnesota about 1855 to try his fortune in the lumber boom near St. Cloud; Joseph, Lucy and family join him about 1878," Terry notes in e-mail message of 10 March 1998.

He had a brother/sister named Stephen McNeil/McNeal born 1831. (134) He Family Line is McNeal. He was married to Ann GALLAGHER in 1842.

21. Ann GALLAGHER had a brother/sister named Michael Gallagher in 1814 in New Brunswick or Ireland.(136) She was born in 1821 in Andover, New Brunswick, Canada.(137) (77)(131) She resided Andover, NB c1830.(138) She had a brother/sister named John Gallagher in Ballinarty, Ireland. (139) Children were:

He resided Caribou ME in 1900.(88) 1900 City Directory of Caribou ME listed William McNeal, "farmer, 40 acres, 6 in potatoes; h. (home) Madawaska Rd., 6 1/2 miles out."


child iv. Joseph MCNEAL (MCNEIL) was born in 1849 in New Brunswick. (77) He resided Caribou ME in 1880.(86) 1880 Census reported Joseph McNeal, farmer, aged 30, with wife, Elizabeth, age 36 and five children -- Francis, 9; Helen, 8' William, 6; Emma, 5; and Harry, 4 -- were living in Caribou.
