I have noted that James's wife Hannah may have been a Burt. The 1790 census at Warwick, Orange Co., N.Y. (where James grew up) shows five heads of household surnamed Burt: Benjamin, Belden, Daniell, y, and z. Burt, like Rockwell, is a surname that is found early on in Ridgefield. That there is a link between the Burts of Ridgefield and those of Warwick is certain. A Ridgefield land record found in Ridgefield Deeds vol. 7, folio 33, dated 26 April 1787, shows Benjamin Burt of Warwick selling to David Scott of Ridgefield all his right, title, etc. to one-fourth part of a Right in the common lands of Ridgefield which his father Benjamin Burt possessed when he died.
