Ancestry  is described above.
Heritage Quest has census records as well as histories and an index to PERSI, the periodical collection of the Allen Co. Public Library.  It also has images of Revolutionary Was Pensions.
Sanborn Maps were originally made for insurance underwriters and cover mainly commercial areas.  They are useful, though, to researchers because they also include some residences, and they have some very early maps of parts of various cities, including Springfield.

PAF is the software offered by the LDS site.  If you have a high speed connection, you can download it free of charge.  Otherwise order a CD for about $10.
Family Tree Maker is a very popular and easy to use database which costs about $30.  However this software is now owned by Ancestry/My Family, and it has changed considerably from the earlier version.  If you want to try this, look for Version 16, the last version before Ancestry removed most of the useful tools, and re-oriented the software to using the WWW (not the 2008 or 2009 versions.).  Many of the printing options have been removed, as well as some reports, book creations, etc.  They also offer a lot of CDs which you really don't need.
