He was retired owner of Sergent Plumbing and attended Humphreys United Methodist Church, Dunbar. He was an Army veteran of the Korean War. He was a lifelong resident of Dunbar.

Surviving: wife, Shirley Wingo Sergent; sons, Michael Lee of Dunbar, Gary Wayne at home; brothers, Don of Cheraw, S.C., Harold of Sanford, Fla., Bob and Bill, both of California; sister, Goldie Jarrett of Sanford.
