1.4 Abraham RUNKLE [ 5 ] was born 14 Jan 1757, the fourth child of Adam RUNKLE and Mary YOUNGBLOOD RUNKLE.  He spent his youth on his father's farm near Annandale, NJ.  On 19 Apr 1779 Abraham married Sarah STOUT, born 4 Apr 1756.  Abraham purchased a farm in West Amwell Twp., Hunterdon Co., NJ, located about one mile south of the present village of Wertsville, NJ.

Of Sarah, Fisher provides the following anecdotes.  She was a devoted, faithful wife and a loving, tender mother.  She was also very domestic, and seldom left her home.  On one occasion when she did travel to visit relatives, on the way she had her husband stop at a neighboring farm to request that they keep an eye on their home lest it burn down in her absence.  At another point in her life, she believed she was going to die, even thought she was in good health at the time.  She would take to her bed and summon her friends and family to her bedside to hear her last wishes.  The sad reactions of those she loved seemed to fuel her desire to repeat this morbid state.  At some point the habit became so pervasive that Abram resolved to try and break her of it.  He did so by telling her that, if she died, he would marry a gossipy, meddlesome, old maid having a poor reputation in the neighborhood, in order to help take care of the children.  This lady, Mary Jane SMITH, was someone whom Sarah abhorred.  The shock hearing of this possibility from her husband may have brought Sarah back to her senses, because her melancholia faded away and did not return until after Abram's death on 11 Apr 1845.  Abram was buried in the old cemetery near Wertsville. Sarah died 29 Dec 1847, and was buried alongside him.  They had the following children:
