Text of Research Report from Frederick R. Boyle, Certified Genealogist dated December 1, 2001:
THE IDENTITY OF WILLIAM HINKLEY
William, b. Brunswick, Me 1 Aug 1782, probable son of Elnathan and Mary (Wilson) Hinkley, d. Parkman, ME 26 Mar 1846, aged 63, buried French's Cemetery Parkman (gravestone record); m. (intentions) Topsham, ME 3 Dec 1808 RACHEL PATTEN, b. Arundel (Kennebunkport), ME 12 June 1787, daughter of John and Sarah (Wiswell) Patten, still alive in Parkman, 1840 (federal census). In 1840 the William Hinkley family consisted of the father and mother, three males 20-30, one male 10-15, one female 10-15 and three females 15-20. In search of Parkman town and vital records the death record of William Hinkley was the only one for that family found. A search was also made of Surname Index Project (SIP) records at the Maine State Library. The search was made for records of Elnathan and Mary (Wilson) Hinkley as well as those for John P. Hinkley, son of William and Rachel, the only one of their children who was enumerated in the 1850 Maine Federal Census.
William Hinkley of Sangerville, with wife Rachel Hinkley, conveyed to Benjamin Thompson of Topsham, 26 February 1825, all his right to land in Topsham "at the northerly end of the bridge in the highway on the western branch of the Cathance River ... formerly owned by my father Elnathan Hinkley, late of Topsham, deceased." [Lincoln County deed 131:354. Since this is the only deed regarding Elnathan's estate it would appear that his widow and other children were also deceased. There is, strangely enough, no probate of the Elnathan Hinkley estate. There is, however, a deed from Samuel Hinkley of Topsham to the same Benjamin Thompson of Topsham, 6 April 1824, conveying a similar piece of property as described in 131:354, with no reference to Elnathan Hinkley. Samuel Hinkley may very well have been another son of Elnathan, and if so Elnathan may have died prior to April 1824. (Lincoln County deed 15:224).] 5
William married Rachel PATTEN, daughter of John PATTEN and Sarah WISWELL, on 7 January 1809 in Topsham, Sagadahoc Co., Maine.1 (Rachel PATTEN was born on 12 June 1787 in Arundel, York Co., Maine 3 and died on an unknown date.)
