Edmund and Frances came from England when Isaac was a baby. Other children were born in New York and New Jersey.

Edmund started for the west (leaving his family in New Jersey) to look for a new home. Got as far as Louisiana, contracted Yellow Fever and died. His wife Frances brought the family to live in Iowa at a later date. Above information taken from a letter written to Ronald and Roxie Whitney by Frances Whitney (Radtke) on January 23, 1964.

The name shown for Edmund in the above letter was corrected to coincide with the 1850 census of New Jersey.

Edmund married Frances HOPE, daughter of William HOPE and Ann BAYLES, on 26 October 1840 in Bowdon, Cheshire, England.1 (Frances HOPE was born on 27 March 1822 in Stockport, England,5 died on 15 July 1877 in , Harrison Co., Iowa 4 6 and was buried in 1877 in Soldier Valley Cemetery, Jackson Twsp., Harrison Co., Iowa 7.)

His surname on the marriage certificate is shown as Witney, their age as "full age", his occupation as Labourer, their residence at time of marriage as Altrincham. His father is shown as Edmund Witney, occupation Labourer. Her father is shown as William Hope, occupation Labourer. They signed their names by making their mark, x.
