John was baptized in Nazeing, Essex County, England on February 26, 1611/12 and came with his parents to America in 1632 on the ship Lion. About 1641, he married Elizabeth Welles, reportedly a sister of Governor Thomas Welles. Elizabeth was born circa 1615 in England and died in Stratford, Connecticut on March 9, 1681/2.
John's name appears among the original patentees of Stratford and also on the list of property owners of 1650. He was made a freeman in May, 1658. He was a prominent citizen, and took an active part in the work of settling the town, but was not as much of a public man as his brother, William. In 1678 he and his brother were on a committee to build a new meeting-house. Sergeant John Curtiss was elected Town Treasurer December 29, 1675. He served as a soldier in King Philip's War, and attached the rank of Ensign (second lieutenant).
John outlived his wife and died in Stratford on December 6, 1707 at the advanced age of 96 years.
