| John Matthews was pressed into service as a British soldier and sent to the colonies to help quell the insurrection prior to the Revolutionary War. By the time the war started, however, his sympathies were with the Patriots. He deserted the British army and fought on the side of the colonials all 8 years of the war, earning himself a place in the DAR patriot books for his descendants. His ancestry remains unknown, however. Read about his son, Thomas Matthews. |
