Following are photos of the tombstones in the Downing Family Cemetery. Bruce and I visited the Downing Cemetery June 22, 2002. Bruce's Aunt Faye SANDLER THOMPSON was laid to rest here in February 2002. Many of Faye's husband's ancestors/relatives are buried in this rural family cemetery, which was located on the Downing Family homeplace.

I found John and Nellie in the 1920 Oklahoma census for Cherokee County, Peggs Township. The first head of householdenumerated for this dwelling was Callie DOWNING, of the Indian race, age 40 and a widow. Four children were listed with her: Steve, age 16; Maggie, age 13; Lillie (this is my best guess), age 11; and Johnie, age 7. The second head of household was John ROACH, age 66. Enumerated with him were his wife Nelli, age 63; a son Tommy, age 29 (single) and a daughter, Annie, age 27 (single). Also enumerated with John was a widowed daughter, Pollie ONHAND, and a granddaughter Evilin (daughter of Pollie).
The next family enumerated was James ROACH, of the Indian race, age 34; his wife Gladys, of the white race, age 30; and their children: Raymon, age 9 and Gracie, age 4. Further down the page was listed Charley ROACH (age 38), his wife Katie (age 34), and their children Emily (age 11), Luke (age 2) and Tusk (best guess) (age 2/12). One of the family files at Rootsweb's World Connect has an entry for John ROACH and his family. According to this family file, the children of John and Nellie GRANT ROACH are: Callie, b abt 1878 (married Joseph DOWNING); Charles, b abt 1880; Sarah, b abt 1882; James, b abt 1884; Polly, b abt 1886; Tandy, b abt 1888; Annie, b abt 1890; and Elmira, b abt 1893. |

The 1920 Oklahoma Census for Cherokee County, Peggs Township lists Cook STILL and his family: Cook STILL, head of household, In(dian), age 41, married, born in Oklahoma, as were his parents Bertha STILL, wife, In(dian), age 32, married, born Oklahoma, as were her parents Chester STILL, son, In(dian), age 18, born Oklahoma Laura STILL, daughter, In(dian), age 16, born Oklahoma Elizzie STILL, daughter, In(dian), age 11, born Oklahoma Robert STILL, son, In(dian), age 9, born Oklahoma Lillie STILL, daughter, In(dian), age 7, born Oklahoma Ivie STILL, daughter, In(dian), age 5, born Oklahoma Pearle STILL, daughter, In(dian), age 2/12, born Oklahoma According to an entry in Rootsweb's WorldConnect: Cook STILL was born 15 SEP 1874 in Tahlequah District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. He died 29 JAN 1940 in Inola, Rogers County, Oklahoma. He was a son of John STILL II and Elizabeth WALLS. Cook STILL married Bertha Beatrice VANN, who was born 19 NOV 1880 in Hadley, Saline District, Cherokee Nation, Indian Territory. She died 22 MAY 1965 in Claremore, Rogers County, Oklahoma. She was a daughter of Joseph and Cynthia DOWNING VANN. The entry for John STILL II and his wife Elizabeth lists seven children, one of whom was Sallie STILL. It indicates Cook's sister Sallie was the second wife of Malachi C. "Mack" DOWNING (see tombstones above). Sources were not given for this information.
