Great Grandparents -- Thomas KUDRON / KUDROŃ and Ursula MODELSKI

My Great-grandfather, Thomas KUDRON / KUDROŃ, immigrated from the Village of Leki Gorne / Łęki Górne, in the former Tarnov Province, (Galicia) Poland (now in Podkarpackie Province).(Current map showing Leki Gorne.) Thomas was born 24 Sep 1869 in Leki Gorne, Galicia (Austria), Poland, house #6. He was the son of Andrew KUDRON and Marianna TOMASIEWICZ. Thomas married Ursula MODELSKI, daughter of Maryanna MODELSKI, on 13 May 1891 in Leki, Galicia (Austria), Poland. Ursula was born 11 Jun 1869 in Leki, Poland, house #1.

Thomas and Ursula were the parents of nine children:  Martha, my grandmother, was the oldest; Andrew "Henry"; Marianna; Catharina "Kate"; Joseph; Frank; Stanislaus; Anna; and John William.  Marianna, Joseph and Stanislaus died at birth or in early childhood.  John William was the only child born in the United States.  All of their children Polish-born children, except Andrew, were born and baptized in the Village of Leki Gorne / Łęki Górne.  For the longest time I was unable to find a birth/baptism record for Andrew, who, according to his obituary was born 21 June of 1893.  While reviewing some of my earlier records, I noticed that Thomas had been named as the Godfather of his nephew, Julian KIELISZEK, who was born and baptized in Zwiernik in April 1893.  Since Julian was born just a couple of months before him, I wondered if Andrew may have also been born in Zwiernik.  I ordered the LDS microfilm for the Parish of Zwiernik again.  There was no baptism record for Andrew....  I pulled up Julian's baptism record again, and upon closer inspection, I found a notation about Thomas that said he was a coachman / wagon driver from Szczegocice (sic).  The Village of Strzegocice is part of the Pilzno Parish, where some of my family lines, including KUDRON, originate.  Unfortunately, the records in the 1893 time period for this village are missing from the LDS microfilm.  There is, however, a Birth Index for the whole Parish, where I found this entry:  Kudroń, Andreas, 1893, 21/7, Strzegocice.  The parents were not named in the index, but the date was only a month off from the date that was published in Andrew's obituary.  The entry in Julian KIELISZEK's baptism record, puts Thomas in Szczegocice / Strzegocice in April 1893.

Many of the marriage and baptism records include the "occupation" of the person.  Thomas and Ursula's marriage record showed that he was a "famulus."  According to my research sources, this term means "generally a landless farm worker or worker on an estate" or "a male slave, servant."  On one of the baptism records of their children Thomas' occupation was given as "inquilinus", which means "a farmer who lived with another" or "a landless or tenant farmer; one who farms for another landowner."  Thomas' father Andrzej, born in the Village of Kozia Wola, a few kilometers northeast of Łęki, was the only child of Jan KUDRON and Apolonia nee PODRAZA.  Jan died when Andrzej was only 10 months old, and his mother did not remarry.  Thomas' brothers-in-law, Ludwig SOKOL and Jan KIELISZEK, were both born out of wedlock. It appears that neither of their mothers married.  They too were probably landless peasants.  All things considered, our KUDRON family was probably very poor.

Thomas' sister and brother-in-law, Anna and Ludwig SOKOL, emigrated from Poland around 1897-1898 with their three children.  According to his obituary, Ludwig / Louis SOKOL and his wife Anna, first settled on a farm near Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska.  They later purchased a farm east of Fullerton in Nance County.  I have not yet located the ship passenger list for the SOKOL family, so I do not know who they were going to be with in Nebraska.  However, Thomas KUDRON and Jan / John KIELISZEK named their brother-in-law Ludwig SOKOL, living in Fullerton, Nebraska, as the person they were meeting, when they also set sail for America.

On 4 July 1906 Thomas and his brother-in-law John KIELISZEK left the Port of Hamburg, Germany aboard the S.S. Kaiserin Auguste Victoria.  They arrived at the Port of  New York on 14 July 1906 -- two of the millions of immigrants who passed through Ellis Island.  Their passage had been paid by their brother-in-law, and they noted that they were going to join Ludwig SOKOL, who was living in Fullerton, Nebraska. Since Thomas was the only KUDRON listed on the Hamburg, Germany passenger list, it was apparent that my great grandmother, Ursula, and their children did not arrive until sometime later. A small notebook that my grandmother, Martha, kept had her year of immigration as 1907. My Aunt Mary said she thought her mother came through Boston. Thomas and Ursula's youngest child, John, was born in the U.S. in 1908. Until early 2005, I had not yet found Ursula and family on a ship passenger list. In late 2004 I found the Declaration of Intention for citizenship of my grandmother's brother Andrew. Andrew indicated on this form that he sailed from Hamburg, Germany on the vessel Ivernia. He arrived at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts, on the 20th of June 1907.

Images of the Ivernia passenger list for June 20, 1907, are on LDS microfilm 1715605. Listed were Ursula KUDRON and her children: Martha, Andrew, Kata (Katherine/Kate), Frank and Anna. They were going to Genoa, Nebraska, to be with Thomas KUDRON, husband and father.

Thomas and Ursula farmed around Genoa in Nance County, Nebraska.  They were members of the rural Ss. Peter and Paul Church at Krakow in Nance County.  In the Ss. Peter and Paul Centennial Book is a listing of the "Early Members of the Rosary Group, 1913".  Ursula KUDRON and Anna SOKOL were both included on this list.  Thomas and Ursula later moved into Columbus in Platte County. Thomas died 9 Mar 1938.  After Thomas' death, Ursula went to live with her daughter Martha and son-in-law Stanislaus GALUS, who were farming south of Columbus between the Platte and Loup Rivers. Ursula died 29 Jun 1940.  Thomas and Ursula are buried in the St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery in different sections.

Before Thomas and Ursula's marriage in May of 1891, Ursula gave birth to an illegitimate son. The church records did not name the father of an illegitimate child, even if his name was known. An exception to this was if the parents ultimately married, then the status of the child was changed to legitimate and the father's name was recorded on the record.

(Ursula's year of immigration can't be right. Tom and Ursula married in 1891 and all but their youngest child was born in Poland. Ursula is the last entry on this page. I noticed on the next page the first person's year of immigration was 1890 and first papers submitted.  The census enumerator must have made a mistake.)

Martha KUDRON

Martha, my grandmother, was born 24 Mar 1891 in Leki Gorne, Galicia, Austria Poland, house #1.  She immigrated to the United States with her mother and siblings, arriving at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts, on 20 June 1907, aboard the S.S. Ivernia.  They were going to Genoa, Nebraska, in Nance County, to join her father Thomas, who had immigrated a year earlier.  In 1910 19-year-old Martha was enumerated with her parents Thomas and Ursula in Loup Township, Platte County, Nebraska.  Martha married Stanislaus GALUS on 31 January 1912 at Sts. Peter and Paul Catholic Church in Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.

Thaddeus A. (Ted) was born 11 Dec 1912 at Genoa, Nance County, Nebraska. On 11 Jul 1934 Thaddeus married Lucille Mildred NANSEL in Monroe, Platte County, Nebraska. Lucille was a daughter of William P. NANSEL and Caroline WILSON. Lucille was born 22 Aug 1913 at Monroe. Ted and Lucille farmed near Monroe for a time before moving to Omaha, Douglas County.  They both worked in the South Omaha Packing Houses.  Ted died 23 Aug 1998 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. Lucille died 2 Aug 1988 in Omaha. Both Thaddeus and Lucille are buried at St. John's Cemetery in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska. They were the parents of two children who are still living.

I grew up only a block and a half from Uncle Ted and Aunt Lucille in our St. Francis Assisi neighborhood in South Omaha.  Many was the time we would walk up the hill past Kudlacz's Grocery store, and up the alley to Uncle Ted's.

Beata Marie / Bess was born 29 Mar 1914 at Genoa, Nance County, Nebraska. She married Floyd Max NANSEL on 6 Feb 1934 at Fullerton, Nance County.  Floyd was a son of Michael NANSEL and Katherine DRYER. He was born 21 Jan 1910 at Monroe, Platte County, Nebraska. Their son Donnie was born 8 Apr 1936; he died at the age of 11 on 1 Jun 1947. Their daughter Kathleen Ann NANSEL was born 8 Dec 1950 in Genoa, Nance County, Nebraska; she died 4 Jan 2000 in Colorado Springs, Colorado. Kathleen was the mother of two adopted children. Bess and Floyd farmed near Monroe, Platte County for sometime, before moving to Columbus. Bess died 5 Jun 2010 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska.  Floyd  died 25 Jun 1995 in Columbus.  Bess, Floyd, Donnie and Kathleen are buried at St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus. There is one son still living.

As a "city girl," I have great memories of visiting Aunt Bess and Uncle Floyd on their farm near Monroe.  There were a few times when my cousin Lora, my sister Ronnie and me would stay for a week or two on the farm during the summer.  Aunt Bess was a great cook...I remember her wonderful homemade doughnuts, and I especially remember her awesome mulberry pies.  There was a large mulberry tree in the yard next to the farm house.  We would stand under the tree, holding an old sheet, and Uncle Floyd would shake the branches, showering us with mulberries, which we caught in the sheet.  I remember playing hide-and-seek in the farmyard, and one year we tore down an old dilapidated hog shed.  My cousin David and I built little rivers and dams out by the old windmill.

Anna Frances was born 28 Nov 1915 at Genoa, Nance County, Nebraska. Anna married Felix Philip FOREMAN on 24 Oct 1938. Felix was a son of Jan \ John FURMANSKI \ FOREMAN and Mary MORITZ.  He was born 4 Jul 1908 in Platte Center, Platte County, Nebraska.  Anna and Felix lived in Ogden, Utah, for a time before moving to South Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.  They both worked in the South Omaha Packing Houses.  Anna loved to cook.  She always had a delectible delight ready to savor.  After her husband Felix died, my husband Bruce and I took Aunt Anna grocery shopping every couple of weeks.  I would often share with her my latest genealogical discovery, which just as often triggered a memory of hers, and would lead me down a path toward more discoveries.  Anna died 24 Jul 2007 at the Hospice House in Omaha.  I was privileged to be with her during her last hours on this earth.  Felix died 3 Apr 1997 at his home in Omaha. Both of them are buried at St. John's Cemetery in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska. They had two children who are still living.

My father, Edmund Stanley was born 11 Nov 1917 in Albion, Boone County, Nebraska.  While he was home on furlough, he met my mother at a dance in Columbus.  After a long distance courtship, he married Dorothy Margaret THOMAS on 30 Jan 1943 in the 46th Armored Regiment Chapel at Camp Beale, near Modesto, California. Dorothy was a daughter of Adolph THOMAS and Julia ZACH. She was born 2 Jul 1921 at Albion, Boone County, Nebraska.  Edmund and Dorothy settled in South Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, after Edmund was discharged from the Army.  He worked at Royal Typewriter for a time.  Shortly after the Veterans' Administration Hospital was built in Omaha, Edmund started working in the lab as a laborer.  Dorothy worked for Zabel's Smoked Fish in South Omaha, then became the custodian of the St. Francis Assisi Parish Church and grade school.  Edmund died 28 Feb 2009 in Omaha.  Dorothy died 3 Jan 2005 in Omaha, after suffering from Alzheimer's for several years. They are both buried at St. John's Cemetery in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska. Edmund and Dorothy were the parents of five daughters, who are still living.

Frances was born (private). She married Edward.

Frank was born 28 Oct 1919 at Albion, Boone County, Nebraska. He died 29 Oct 1919 and is buried at St. Peter and Paul Cemetery in Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.

Henry was born (private). He married Alice.

Laura was born 15 Dec 1923 at Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska. She moved to South Omaha with her parents, after they left the farm in Columbus.  Laura married Chester Joseph ZIEMBA on 27 Dec 1948 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Chester was a son of Thomas ZIEMBA and Sophia SOSNOWSKI. He was born 6 Jan 1914 in Detroit.  Chester's uncle, Louis ZIEMBA, lived in the Fullerton, Nance County, Nebraska area.  Laura and Chester met when he was in Nebraska visiting his uncle.  Chester was a lawyer in Detroit.  He died of cancer 20 Jul 1961 in Detroit. After her husband's death, Laura returned to South Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.  She work for the National Park Service.  Laura died 10 Oct 2001 at her home in Omaha. They were the parents of one adopted son, Chester Jonathan, who was born 24 Jul 1955 in Detroit and died 16 Mar 1975 in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska. Laura, Chester and their son are all buried at St. John's Cemetery in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska.

Mary was born (private). She married Chester Sylvester WSZALEK in 1945. Chester was a son of Joseph and Sophie WSZALEK. He was born 19 Dec 1917 in Wisconsin and died 11 Feb 1999 in Milwaukee, Milwaukee County, Wisconsin. Chester is buried in Milwaukee. They were the parents of six children, who are still living.

Andrew, aka Henry KUDRON

Henry's obituary stated he was born 21 June 1893. For the longest time I had not found the birth record for Andrew / Henry in the Parish records for Leki Gorne, Poland, where his parents and Polish-born siblings were all born.  Through a bit of genealogical detective work, I found that Andrew was born and baptized in the Village of Strzegocice, which was part of the Pilzno Parish.  Andrew's first cousin, Julian KIELISZEK, was born in April of 1893 in the Village of Zwiernik, just a couple of months before Andrew.  Andrew's father, Thomas, was named as Julian's Godfather and I began to wonder if Andrew might also have been born in Zwiernik.  I ordered the LDS microfilm for the Parish of Zwiernik again, but found no birth record for Andrew.  I had originally extracted Julian's birth and baptism information back in September 2000.  Now, 10 years later, I turned to his record again, and there I saw a notation I originally missed that said Thomas was a coachman / wagon driver (auriga) living in Szczegocice (sic).  At the time I initially reviewed Julian's birth record, Szczegocice would have meant nothing to me.  I have since ordered the microfilms for the Pilzno Parish, having learned that some of my family lines, including the KUDRONs, originated from another village in that Parish.  Strzegocice is one of the villages in the Pilzno Parish.  The 1893 records for Strzegocice were missing from the microfilm, however there was a birth index on the roll, which did list an Andreas KUDRON, born 21 July 1893 in Strzegocice - just one month off of the birth date in the obituary.  While the index entry did not name the parents of Andreas, I am fairly confident this is the birth entry for my granduncle, Andrew KUDRON.

Andrew immigrated to the United States with his mother and siblings, arriving at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts, on 20 June 1907, aboard the S.S. Ivernia.  They were going to Genoa, Nebraska, in Nance County, to join his father Thomas, who had immigrated a year earlier.  In 1910 17-year-old Andrew was enumerated with his parents Thomas and Ursula in Loup Township, Platte County, Nebraska.

Andrew was married three times, being widowed twice. The 1920 U.S. census shows Andrew was living in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, with his wife Blanch and 7 month old son Joseph.  My Dad and my Aunts have said that Andrew's son Joseph was adopted.

Andrew filed his Declaration of Intention to become a United States citizen on 16 November 1921 in Platte County, Nebraska. The information he provided on this document was the key in finding when my great grandmother and the rest of the family immigrated from Poland.

Andrew also stated on his Declaration of Intention:  "I am married; the name of my wfe is Bernice; she was born at Tarnov, Austria and now resides at Columbus, Nebraska with me."  I speculated that the Blanch named in the 1920 census and the Bernice named on the Declaration were the same person.

Blanche's maiden name was spelled three different ways on the marriage extract, and I had doubts that BLANETO / BLANCTO was correct.  I could not find anywhere on the web that the surname BLANETO exists.  The note on the extract said her marriage certificate had her name as Bronislava PLANETA.  I found that the name PLANETA is a Polish surname.  The 1920 census showed she immigrated in 1914.  At Ancestry.com I found a 19-year-old Bronislawa PLANETA on a ship passenger list...arriving in New York on 2 December 1913, her final destination, Columbus, Nebraska.

The Wola Rzedzinska LDS microfilms are on permanent loan at my local Family History Center.  Based on her age on the ship manifest and the 1920 census, Bronislawa's estimated year of birth would be 1894 / 1895.  I found this entry in the Wola Rzedzinska (Rzędzińska) baptism records:

I did a search on the Platte County NEGenWeb site and found a listing for Blanche in the Columbus 1915 Directory -- Planeta Blanche wks Clother Hotel.

Blanche died sometime between November 1921, when Andrew filed his Declaration of Intention, and November 1922, when he married his second wife.  I have not found her date and place of death as yet.

Andrew and his second wife were also in the Nance County online marriage extracts.  On 12 November 1922 he married a widow, Belle (Balbina) SIEMEK TOCZEK, at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.  The record showed this was the second marriage for both of them.  Belle was a daughter of Peter SIEMEK and Antonina BANDUR.  The 1920 census shows that Belle was first married to Tony TOCZEK.  They were the parents of Louis, Henry and Edwin TOCZEK.  The Nebraska 1930 U.S. census shows the two oldest boys were living with their widowed grandfather, Peter SIEMEK, in Loup Township, Platte County.

Belle also died, leaving Andrew widowed a second time.  I have not found her date or place of death as yet.  Since Andrew married his 3rd wife in 1925, Belle died sometime before then.

According to his obituary, Andrew moved to Sioux City, Iowa, in 1924.  He married Margaret (Maggie) SWIDERSKI in Sioux City in 1925. He was a member of St. Francis Catholic Church. The 1930 census shows him living in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan, with his wife Margaret and 10-year-old son Joseph.

Andrew died 15 Oct 1957 in Sioux City, Iowa, of a heart attack at the age of 64. He is buried in Calvary Catholic Cemetery in Sioux City, Iowa. In May 1998 Bruce and I located the grave of Andrew / Henry KUDRON.  The cemetery record showed that a single grave was purchased by Margaret KUDRON.

I am not sure when Margaret / Maggie KUDRON died.  There is an entry in the online Social Security Death Index for a Margaret KUDRON, born 3 Jun 1898, died Jan 1979, last address of record Independence, Jackson, Missouri, last benefit Independence, Jackson, Missouri, issued by Iowa, SSN 479-09-5133.  In the 1930 census Margaret gave her age as 33, so her approximate year of birth was 1897, close to the SSDI birth date.  I have nothing to confirm this is the Margaret KUDRON who was married to my granduncle.

Catharina / Kathryn / Kate KUDRON

Kathryn / Catharina "Kate" was born 15 Nov 1896, Leki Gorne, Galicia, Poland. She immigrated from Poland with her mother Ursula and her siblings, arriving at the Port of Baltimore 20 June 1907.

Kate married Joseph Floyd SPES, son of Valentine and Margarett JAWORSKI SPES / SPIECE, on 22 May 1916 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska. They farmed near Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska.

Kate and Joseph were the parents of:

Josephine was born 23 June 1917 in Nebraska.  She married John Paul KOSINSKI, who was born 23 January 1907.  John was a son of Paul and Sophia DUDEK KOSINSKI.  Josephine died 17 November 1910 and is buried in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery.  John died 1 May 2005 in California.

Theodore "Ted" was born Feb 1920.  He died 26 Jan 1971 in Multnomah County, Oregon.

Monica A. was born 13 Sep 1921.  She married ________ MARTIN.  Monica died 22 Feb 2009 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.  She is buried at St. Peter Catholic Cemetery, near Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska.

Edwin was born about 1924.  He is buried at Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska.

Leona Catharina was born 31 Jul 1926.  She married Gerald SAZAMA.  Leona died 15 Oct 2007.

Rose Mary \ Mary Rose was born about 1929.  She married Morse RODGERS.  Rose \ Mary is buried at Neligh, Antelope County, Nebraska

Franciscus / Frank KUDRON

Frank was born 19 June 1901 in Leki Gorne, Galicia, Poland. He immigrated to the U.S. with his mother and siblings, arriving at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts, on 20 June 1907 on the SS Ivernia.

Frank married Rose Helen CZARNIK, a daughter of Peter and Mary JARECKI CZARNIK on 11 February 1924 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska. Frank and Rose settled in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, where he worked for the railroad. According to his daughter, Frank became ill and was hospitalized for a period of time. The doctors released him from the hospital, saying he could return to work. He apparently caught cold and later died 2 Jan 1928 in Columbus at the age of 26. Frank is buried in St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska.

Frank and Rose were the parents of one daughter, Valeria.  Valeria was born 23 November 1924 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska.  She married Charles HOTZ on 18 August 1951.  Valeria died 5 June 2007.

Rose CZARNIK KUDRON later married a widower, Stanley KANTOR, on 17 Nov 1930 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. Rose and Stanley lived in South Omaha. Rose died 13 Feb 1982 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska, and is buried at St. John's Cemetery in Bellevue, Sarpy County, Nebraska.

Anna KUDRON

Anna was born 11 May 1905 in Leki Gorne, Galicia, Poland. She immigrated to the U.S. with her mother and siblings, arriving at the Port of Boston, Massachusetts, on 20 June 1907 on the SS Ivernia. 

Anna married Charles TRAGARZ on 14 Feb 1922 at Sts. Peter and Paul Church, Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.  Charles was born Stanislaus TRAGARZ, a son of Barthomiej TRAGARZ and Anna nee TRAGARZ, on 23 Oct 1894 in Leki Gorne, Galicia, Poland. Charles arrived in the United States aboard the Kronprinz Wilhelm, sailing from Bremen, 2 April 1912, arriving at the Port of New York, 9 April 1912.  He was going to Duncan, Platte County, Nebraska to be with his uncle Jacob MICZEK.

Charles and Anna farmed in Polk County, before moving to Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. They were the parents of two children:

Edward TRAGARZ was born 28 Jun 1924, Shelby, Nebraska; he married Ann L. DURACINSKI 1 Dec 1962 at St. Bonaventure Catholic Church, Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. Edward died 5 Jul 1992 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska; Ann died 26 Jun 1970. Both are buried at St. Bonaventure Cemetery.

Mae TRAGARZ was born 27 May 1929, Shelby, Nebraska; she married Albert ALT 27 May 1947 at Pilzno Church, Polk County, Osceola, Nebraska. They were the parents of seven children. Mae died 18 Feb 1990 and is buried in St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska.

Mae and Albert's daughter Cheryl Lea ALT ANDERSON was killed in an accident 26 May 1987. Cheryl was born 6 Aug 1962 in Columbus, Platte county, Nebraska. She is buried in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus.

Anna died 16 Oct 1978 in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska; Charles died 13 May 1961. Both are buried in the St. Bonaventure Cemetery in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska.

John William KUDRON

According to a note in a small spiral notebook that belonged to my Grandmother, John's date of birth was 15 Apr 1908. On his Social Security application, dated 2 Oct 1937, John gave his date of birth as 1 Apr 1909 in Genoa, Nance County, Nebraska.  I sent to the State of Nebraska asking if they could locate John's birth record, but they were not able to find one.  At the time he applied for his Social Security card, John was working for Schmidt Bros. in Greer, Idaho. He gave his employer's address as Lewiston, Idaho. According to one of my Aunts, John married a woman named Zelpha. I was able to find a Social Security application for a Zelpha SAMSON KUDRON dated Aug. 29, 1940. Zelpha's address on this application was 517 Main St., Clarkston, Washington, which is just across the Snake River from Lewiston, Idaho, where John KUDRON applied for his SSN. Zelpha was the daughter of Evan Loyd SAMSON and Emma Georgia McCONNELL, born 27 Oct 1908, Dunning, Blaine County, Nebraska.

Great Great Grandparents -- Andrzej KUDROŃ / Andrew KUDRON and Marianna TOMASIEWICZ

For quite some time I was unable to find a baptism record for Andreas / Andrew. His marriage record, dated 1 Sep 1858, said he was 28 years old, giving a calculated birth year of 1830.  At some point I went back and re-examined the marriage record in the Łęki Górne / Leki Gorne microfilms.

I initially failed to observe the additional notation following the names of Andreas' parents.  At first I had trouble deciphering the words.  I finally determined that the words were "di pagu Kozia Wola oriunda", meaning "originating from the village of Kozia Wola".  The microfilm index at FamilySearch.org did not have an entry for Kozia Wola.  Through a sheer stroke of luck (or the guidance of my great great grandfather's spirit), I found a reference to Kozia Wola as one of the villages included in the Parish of Pilzno, Galicia, Poland.  I ordered the microfilmed records for the Pilzno Parish from the Family History Library and discovered the baptism record for Andreas.  This discovery took me back two more generations for my KUDRON family and opened up other female lines.

As of August 2010, I have yet to find a birth/baptism record for Marianna TOMASIEWICZ. I have found records for some of her siblings born before and after her in the Łęki Górne / Leki Gorne Parish, but none for her. The marriage record for Andrew KUDRON and Marianna TOMASIEWICZ gives her age as 25 years old, which would give an estimated birth year of 1833.

In addition to my Great Grandfather Thomas, Andrew and Marianna had the following children:

Carolina KUDRON
Carolina was their first born. She was born 3 Oct 1859 in Łęki Górne, house #6. She was baptised on 4 Oct 1859. On her baptism record, under her name, is a "+". This is usually accompanied by a date and indicates the date of death. I searched the death records for Leki Parish (LDS film #1898740) and found the death record for Carolina.

Anna KUDRON
Anna, the second child of Andrew and Marianna, was born 3 May 1862 in Leki Gorne, house #6. She was baptized on 4 May 1862. Anna married Ludovicus / Louis SOKOL, October 5, 1884 in Leki Poland. According to the 1910 Nebraska census for Nance County, Lewis / Louis SOKOL immigrated to the U.S. in 1897. His wife Anna immigrated in 1898.

Louis and Anna KUDRON SOKOL had three children, all born in Poland: John, Marianna and Thomas Anthony. I found on the NEGenWeb Nance County online resources the marriage records for all three of their children. All took place in the Ss. Peter and Paul Catholic Church at Krakow, Nebraska.

John Louis SOKOL was born 18 Oct 1885, Łęki Górne / Leki Gorne, house 351, Galicia, Poland.  He first married Stella (Tekla, Tillie) CIELOHA, a daughter of Joseph and Katherine MOSTEK CIELOHA, on 28 Oct 1908 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church in Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.  John and Stella had one son, Leo, who was born about 1911.

John second married Minnie CZARNIK on 18 Apr 1942, in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska.  Minnie was born 28 Feb 1908, a daughter of Peter and Mary JARECKI CZARNIK.  John SOKOL died 11 Sep 1984. Stella CIELOHA SOKOL died 12 Dec 1945; Minnie CZARNIK KIELISZEK SOKOL died 29 Mar 1982. All three are buried at St. Bonaventure Cemetery, Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska.

Marianna SOKOL, born 1 Mar 1888, Łęki Górne / Leki Gorne, Galicia, Poland, married Michael OPELA/OPIELA, born 24 Sep 1877,  a son of George and Victoria OPELA, on 4 May 1903 at Ss. Peter and Paul Church, Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska.

Michael and Marianna OPELLA were enumerated in the 1910 Nebraska census in Prairie Creek Township, Nance County. Three children were listed with them: John, age 6; Joe, age 2; and Eddie, age 7 months. An online 1930 Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, directory at http://www.rootsweb.com/~neplatte/1930dir_c8.html lists Michael and Mary OPELLA residing at 1617 4th st. They were enumerated in the U.S. 1930 census for Nebraska in Columbus, Platte County. Their children listed in the 1930 census were: Minnie, age 15; Viola, age 13; Helen, age 11; Phillip, age 10; Mike, age 8; Loretta, age 6; and Irene, age 3 4/12.

According to her mother's obituary, Marianna was residing in Chicago at the time of her mother's death in 1948. I located Marianna's death notice in an online Chicago Tribune Historical Archive. (The link to this site no longer works.)

Marianna's death notice indicates that her husband Michael predeceased her. I have not found his date or place of death.

Anthony SOKOL was born about May 1890 (have not found his birth record in the Leki Parish records), first married Catherine KOLODZEY, daughter of George (Adalbert / Wojciech) and Katie CIOCHON / CHOCHUN KOLODZEY, on 17 Feb 1909.  Catharine was born 19 Nov 1890 in Wola Rzedzinska, Galicia, Austria Poland.  Anthony and Catherine were the parents of Carolyn, Frank, Joseph, Theodore, Steven, Lucille, Richard, Margaret and Frances. They later divorced.

Anthony second married Hattie Ida KALABUNDE / KLABUNDE, born 23 Jan 1895. Anthony and Hattie both died in a car accident 4 Nov 1956 in San Bernadino, California.  They are buried at Rose Hill Memorial Park in Whittier, California.

Catherine KOLODZEY married John ZIEMBA, a widower, about 1960 in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska. She died 13 Aug 1976 and is buried at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery in Omaha.

Over the 4th of July 2000 weekend I found Louis SOKOL's burial place at St. Lawrence Catholic Cemetery just outside Silver Creek, Merrick County, Nebraska; he died on 18 April 1939. A third cousin through my KUDRON line found that Anna KUDRON SOKOL died February 24, 1948, in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. Anna's obituary indicates she was buried in the Catholic cemetery in Silver Creek, Merrick County, Nebraska. Bruce and I walked the St. Lawrence Cemetery, but did not find a tombstone for Anna SOKOL. There is an empty plot next to the grave of Louis SOKOL, so I wonder if that is Anna's unmarked grave.

Thecla KUDRON

Thomas' sister Thecla was born and baptised 12 Feb 1865 in Leki Gorne, house #25. In the Leki Gorne microfilm records I found a daughter Lucia was born to Tecla on 25 Aug 1890, no house # was given. Tecla married Joannes / John KIELISZEK on 19 Nov 1890 in Leki Gorne Parish in Poland. In reviewing my earlier records I found Jan KIELISZEK listed on the Hamburg, Germany passenger list on the line directly below my GrGrandfather Thomas KUDRON. The age of Jan (40) on the passenger list in 1906 would compute to the approximate date of birth I have for him from his marriage record (1867).  Thomas and Jan's destination in the United States was Fullerton, Nebraska, where their brother-in-law L. SOKOL was living.  L. SOKOL would have been Louis SOKOL, who married Anna KUDRON, sister of Thomas and Thecla.

Lucia's brothers, Roman and Julian, (half-brothers?) both named her as their nearest living releative in Poland on the ship manifests when they immigrated to the United States.  Roman KIELISZEK listed his sister Lucya KIELISZEK of Leki Gorne as his nearest relative living in Poland. Roman was a passenger on the S.S. Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, sailing from Hamburg to New York. Date of arrival May 24, 1913.  Julian KIELISZEK named his sister Lucia KIELISZEK of Pilsno as his nearest relative living in Poland. Julian was a passenger on the S.S. Pres Grant, sailing from Danzig (now Gdańsk) to New York. Date of arrival February 16, 1921. This would have been his return from duty in Haller's Army.

I have no other information about Lucia KIELISZEK.

I have found three children of John and Thecla KUDRON KIELISZEK.

In 1918 Julius volunteered for Haller's Polish Army in France during WW I. Julius' application papers (submitted in Omaha, Nebraska) indicated he was born 17 Apr 1893 in Zwiernik, Galicia, Poland. An application for a marriage license was made in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska, on June 29, 1926 by Julius KIELISZEK and Minnie CZARNIK (dau. of Peter and Mary JARECKI CZARNIK). A son Joseph was born to Julius and Minnie on 16 Mar 1927. Joseph moved to Omaha, married and divorced. He died on 30 Jun 1980 at the age of 53 and was cremated.

Julius / Julian died 19 Mar 1965. His brief obituary in the Columbus Telegram said that Julius died at the Norfolk State Hospital with services being conducted from Sacred Heart Church in Norfolk, Madison County, Nebraska, and burial in Hillcrest cemetery in Norfolk. The obituary from the Norfolk Daily News named "one daughter, Mrs. Mary Lou Loeseke, Columbus; and a son, Joe, Omaha" as survivors.

I do not know the first couple standing behind the bride and groom.  The second couple is my granduncle Frank KUDRON and his wife Rose nee CZARNIK.  Frank was a first cousin of Julian.  Minnie and Rose were sisters.  The last person on the right may be Julian's father John KIELISZEK.

Roman KIELISZEK

As of September 2002 the only other information I had found on John / Jan KIELISZEK was in the 1920 Nebraska Soundex. He was 53 years old (b. about 1867), living in Genoa, Nance County, and was living alone. At this point I had not found anything to show if Tecla KUDRON ever came to the United States, nor did I know when John or Julian died.  In early September I found a link to a new search engine on the NEGenWeb Madison County, Nebraska site for Columbus and Norfolk Historical Obituaries. I located entries for both John and Julius. John (surname spelled KIELYSZEK) died 30 Nov 1938. A copy of his obituary noted

"Mr. Kielyszek, a native of Poland, made his home in this country for more than 30 years, coming here after the death of his wife, nee Miss Tillie Kudron. After he came here his two sons, Julius of Columbus, and Romon, of Omaha, joined him."

The obituary went on to name "Miss Marian Kielyszek of Pilsno, Poland, and two grandchildren, Joseph and Mary Louise Kielyszek of Columbus" as survivors. John was buried at St. Bonaventure Catholic Cemetery in Columbus, Platte County, Nebraska. I suspect his grave is unmarked, as his name does not appear in the cemetery extracts published by the Platte County Kinseekers.

This was the first reference of Roman (Romon) KIELISZEK I'd come across.  John KIELISZEK's obituary said that his son Romon was from Omaha. I checked several years of the Omaha City Directory in the 1938 timeframe, but did not find Romon/Roman KIELISZEK listed.  I checked through all of the 'K' entries looking for a different spelling, but still found nothing.  I searched the Platte County Rootsweb (http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ne/county/platte/) site and found an entry in the 1917 Draft List.

I later found Roman KIELISZEK on a ship passenger list. Roman was listed on the S.S. Kaiserin Auguste Victoria, sailing from Hamburg, Germany to New York. His date of arrival was May 24, 1913. Roman was 17 years old. He gave his last permanent address as Leki Gorne and named his sister Lucya Kieliszek of Leki Gorne as his nearest relative in Poland. His destination in the United States was Genoa, Nebraska and he was going to join his father Jan Kieliszek.

I have not been able to find anything more about Roman. I've tried many different searches in the online Social Security Death Index and in the databases at Ancestry.com, but have not found anything that could be Roman. Since he was named as a survivor in his father John's obituary, Roman was still living in 1938.

A daughter Maria was born 14 August 1904. She remained in Poland.

Great Great Great Grandparents -- Joannes / Jan KUDROŃ and Apolonia PODRAZA

My 3rd great grandparents were Joannes/ Jan KUDRON and Apolonia nee PODRAZA.  Joannes was born 13 Oct 1809 in the Village of Lipiny in the Pilzno, Poland, parish.  He was a son of Simon KUDRON and Regina nee OSZKANDY.  Apolonia PODRAZA was baptized 4 Feb 1805 in the Łęki Górne parish.  She was a daughter of Stanislaus PODRAZA and Margaretha PYRCHLA.

Apolonia was first married to Laurentius CURYŁO / CURYLO on 19 Sep 1821 in the Leki parish.  They were the parents of Michael, born 7 Sep 1824 in Kozia Wola, died 17 Oct 1824 in Kozia Wola; Joannes Cantius, born 13 Oct 1825 in Kozia Wola, died 29 Jun 1854 in Kozia Wola; and Valentinus, born 21 Jan 1828 in Kozia Wola, died 24 Feb 1829 in Kozia Wola.  Laurentius died 6 Aug 1828 in Kozia Wola of disentery.

Joannes KUDRON and Apolonia PODRAZA were married on 4 Feb 1829 in Kozia Wola, Parish of Pilzno, Poland.  Joannes and Apolonia had only one son, my great great grandfather Andreas / Andrzej, born on 22 Nov 1830 in Kozia Wola.  Joannes died about 15 August 1831 at the age of 33, not even a year after the birth of his son.

Apolonia did not remarry after the death of her second husband Joannes.  She died 6 Feb 1859 in Leki Dolne, Galicia, Poland, house 69, at the age of 56.

4th Great Grandparents -- Simon KUDRON and Regina OSZKANDY

My 4th great grandparents, Simon KUDRON and Regina OSZKANDY, were married 16 Nov 1795 in the Village of Lipiny, Parish of Pilzno, Galicia, Poland.  Based on their ages at the time of their marriage, Simon was born about 1771 and Regina was born about 1777.  I have not found baptism records for them yet.  Simon's death record dated 15 Apr 1846 has his age as 90 at the time of his death, which would make his birth year 1756.  His wife is named on the record and the house number matches with other records for him.

Andreas appears to be the only child of Simon and Regina who did not die in infancy or early adulthood.  Andreas was baptized 29 Oct 1812 in Lipiny, Parish of Pilzno, house 24.  He married Hedvigis SWICZCEK \ SWIRCZEK on 18 Nov 1833 in Lipiny, Parish of Pilzno.
