My Great Great Grandfather Ignatz ZACH was born
20 Jul 1819 in
Kurzschwarza, Austria. He was a son of Johann and Julianna SCHREIBER
ZACH, and a grandson of Joseph and Elizabeth DRUCKER ZACH. On 24 Nov
1846 in Kurzschwarza he married Maria PFEIFER, a
daughter of Michael and Eva KASSLER PFEIFER.
Maria was born 7 Dec 1821
in Kurzschwarza, Austria. I do not know yet if Ignatz or
Maria had any siblings. According to family notes Michael PFEIFER,
Maria's father, had a sister Johanna who married Mathias WIESER.
(Pronounced WEEZER.) They are the ancestors of the WIESERs who
first settled in Wisconsin and who also migrated to the midwest,
specifically to Nebraska and South Dakota. The WIESERs connect to the
HOFFMANNs who settled in Pierce County, Nebraska. More about my PFEIFER family and the
WIESERs and HOFFMANNs.

Ignatz and Maria's oldest son Ignatz came to the
United States through the Port of New York, New York, on the S.S.
Hanover, arriving on 28 May 1872. He stopped first in Wisconsin
for a few
months, before coming to the St. Mary's community, a few miles south of
Humphrey, in Platte County, Nebraska. Ignatz and Maria arrived at the
port of New York, New York, on the ship America on 27
June 1874, with their children Franz, Johann (John),
Juliana, Walburga and Vincenz. They settled in the St. Mary's
community and spent the rest of their lives there. Maria died
30 Aug 1885; Ignatz died 24 Apr 1903. Both are buried in the St. Mary
of the Angels cemetery.

John ZACH

Juliana ZACH was born about 1855 in Austria. She immigrated with
her parents and siblings to the St. Mary's community in Platte
county, Nebraska. Julia married Ignatz VEITH on 29 Oct 1877 in
Platte County, Nebraska. Ignatz was a son of Francis VEITH and
Josepha STEINBECK. The ZACH family history in the St. Francis of
Assisi (Humphrey) Centennial Book, lists four children born to Ignatz
and Julia: Frank, Joseph,
Vincent and Mary Ann. The Centennial Book goes on to say that
[t]he birth of Mary Ann is the last mention of Julianna's name [in the church records]; perhaps she died after this. But we do find mention of the name of Ignatz Veith again. He is married to Rosalia Wolf, and 11 of their children were baptized at St. Mary's. No record could be found of their marriage in either St. Francis' or St. Mary's records.I did find Ignatz and Juliana enumerated with their four children in the 1885 Nebraska State census in Humphrey Precinct, Platte County, Nebraska. This census was taken in June 1885. The 1900 U.S. census for Nebraska has Ignatz with wife Rosa, who shows she was married 10 years. So Juliana must have died sometime between June 1885 and about 1890, when Ignatz married a second time. Ignatz and his second wife, Rosa, had at least 13 children. The 1910 U.S. census shows Ignatz and Rosa enumerated in Tulare County, California. I do not know when or where Julia died or where she is buried.
Leo was Logan County's No. 1 man in the Selective Service Drawing and was inducted into the Army in October of 1940. He spent four years in the Army Engineer Corps. This time was spent principally on work on the ALCAN Highway in Alaska, and in the Aleutians in combat engineering. Leo returned to the states on Dec. 30, 1944 and was honorably discharged on June 21, 1945, with the rank of sergeant.Leo died 4 Mar 2004 in Long Beach, California, after surgery for a broken hip. According to Leo's obituary, he was cremated, graveside services were held at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling, Colorado. He was survived by his brother Joseph of Seal Beach and his sister Helen SPAULDING of Glendale, California, and two nieces.
He served in the Navy during World War II aboard the USS Saratoga. He then moved to Los Angeles, and worked in the aircraft industry. He retired in 1983 and lived at Leisure World in Seal Beach.Joseph died 8 Aug 2004 in Los Alamitas, California, after suffering a stroke. He was survived by his sister Helen SPAULDING of Glendale, California, and two nieces. Joseph was buried at Riverside Cemetery in Sterling, Colorado.
