My Dad's sister, Laura M. GALUS was born 16 Dec 1923 in Ewing, Holt County, Nebraska.  She died on 10 Oct 2001 at her home in Omaha, Douglas County, Nebraska.  In the early 1940's Laura moved from the Columbus, Platte County, area with her parents, Stanislaus and Martha KUDRON GALUS, to South Omaha in Douglas County.  Laura married Chester Joseph ZIEMBA in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan on 27 Dec 1948. Chester was born 6 Jan 1914 in Detroit, Michigan and died of cancer on 20 Jul 1961 in Detroit.  In December 1955 they adopted Chester Jonathan who was born 24 Jul 1955 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan.  He died 16 Mar 1975 in Omaha, Nebraska.  Laura and Chester, and their adopted son Chester Jonathan, are buried in St. John's Cemetery in Omaha (Bellevue) Nebraska.

Laura's parents were both born in Łęki Górne, Galicia, Poland, which was part of Austria at the time of their birth. Chester was a son of Thomas and Sophie (nee SOSNOWSKI) ZIEMBA, both of whom were from this same parish in Poland.

Thomas ZIEMBA was born 5 Mar 1885 in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Austria Poland; he died 27 Dec 1950, Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan and is buried at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Detroit. According to the 1920 U.S. census for Michigan, Thomas immigrated from Poland about 1913. His wife was Sophia nee SOSNOWSKI, a twin daughter of Stanislaus SOSNOWSKI and Anna nee RECZKOWSKI. Sophia was born in Łęki Dolne, Galicia, Poland, on 12 Aug 1888.

These two census entries show that Thomas, Sophia and their son Stephen immigrated in 1913 or 1914.  I searched the Ellis Island One Step search at http://www.jewishgen.org/databases/eidb/ellisgold.html for a T Zieba, arrival date of 1913.  I found that Tomasz, Zofia and Stefan ZIEBA arrived at Ellis Island, New York, on the ship Kaiser Wilhelm Der Grosse on 9 July 1913.  They were going to Detroit, Michigan, to be with their brother-in-law Wojciech Nowak, who lived at 962 Archer (maybe?) St. in Detroit.

At least one of Thomas' brothers, Louis, immigrated in 1910 and settled in Nance County, Nebraska. Louis married Julia UZENDOWSKI. (Update Jan 2002) I searched through the online Social Security Death Index using the birth dates I extracted from the Łęki Górne birth records. I found a perfect date match for a John ZIEMBA (born 6 Jun 1882; died May 1973 in Columbus, Platte County, NE).

Thomas and Louis ZIEMBA were sons of Joseph and Agnes PIECZONKA ZIEBA/ZIEMBA. Their father's first marriage was to Sophia KOZIOL.  I did not find any children born to them in Łęki Church records.

Joseph's parents were Petrus and Rosalia CZARNIK ZIĘBA. Joseph's place of birth was shown as Szynwałd (Galicia, Austria Poland) on his first marriage record. Based on his age at the time of his marriage, he was born about 1854.  In October 2006 I ordered one of the LDS microfilms for the Parish of Szynwałd.  The church records show that Joseph was born 15 Oct 1854 in Szynwałd, Galicia, Poland, house #65.

According to the biography information for Louis ZIEMBA in the Sts. Peter and Paul centennial book (Krakow, Nance county, Nebraska), he and Thomas were two of sixteen children born to Joseph and Agnes PIECZONKA ZIEBA/ZIEMBA. I've found birth records for twelve of them in the Łęki parish. The microfilm I have stops at 1904, so the others were probably born after that.

Peter and Paul Church, Krakow, Nance County, Nebraska USA.  Julia was born to Peter UZENDOWSKI and Catharine SPES (SPEAS, SPIECE) on 24 Jun 1900.  They were the parents of Thaddeus, Emily, Theodore, Martin and Edward.  Louis died 21 Feb 1970; Julia died 4 Dec 1981.  They are both buried in Fullerton, Nance County, Nebraska USA.
