The name STAVAS looks like a phonetic spelling of the Polish surname STAWARZ (pronounced sta-vash). There is no letter 'V' in the Polish language. The letter 'W' sounds like a 'V'.
In the immigration information at Ancestry.com I found the following family, which may be that of Joseph STAVAS. The second pages of this manifest were not online, which in this case would have named who and where they were going to be with.

Nance County, Nebraska) centennial book, Joseph and Marianna immigrated
to the United States in 1882. The biography says that Joseph was
born in 1843 in Machowa, Poland and that Katherine, of Zajanskowic,
Poland, was born in 1854.
While transcribing records from the LDS microfilm 2006734 for the Pilzno, Poland, Parish, I came across the marriage record of Józef (Joseph) BARO and Catharina nee CZUBA.

Marianna was a daughter of Valentinus STORC / SZTORC and Magdalena nee SWIERCZEK. I have strong suspicions that Valentinus is my great great granduncle, but I have not made a firm link yet.
The Ss. Peter and Paul biography named five sons and two daughters born to Joseph and Katherine: Michael, John, Charles, Frank, Joseph, Anna and Veronica.
