Marge's SZTORC Family in the United States

John / Jan SZTORC / STORTZ - Great Granduncle
Thomas and Andrew SZTORC / STORTZ - 1st cousins twice removed, 1st cousins of my grandfather Stanislaus GALUS

The chart below begins with my great great grandfather, Joannes Cantius SZTORC / Jan, and three of his eight children.  Wojciech and Jan are my great granduncles; Agnieszka is my great grandmother.  Wojciech's two sons, Thomas and Andrew immigrated to Chicago.  Jan / John first married in Leki Gorne, Galicia, Poland, then after the death of his wife immigrated to Chicago.  My grandfather, Stanislaus GALUS, immigrated to Tarnov, Platte County, Nebraska.

My SZTORC Family in the United States

John / Jan SZTORC / STORTZ and (1) Marianna MODELSKI, (2) Katarzyna BRANDYS - Great Granduncle

In April of 2011 I received a post on Facebook from a woman researching a Chicago SZTORC family.  Lisa wrote:
Found your INCREDIBLE website today about your SZTORC family members. I am interested in geneology and am researching information for my partner, Brenda. Her Great Grandfather is John Sztorc (spelled a million different ways!) b. 23 July 1857 - d. 10 Feb 1926. We can't seem to find ANY other information about John (Jan). I can't find any information about his immigration or his marriage to his wife Catherine (Katie). Would love to figure out if your Sztorc family and Bren's are related somehow.
Lisa had the names of John / Jan's parents as Jan SZTORC and Mary nee TWOREK from an undocumented family group sheet compiled by another family member.  Jan SZTORC and Mary TWOREK are the names of my great great grandparents.  My great grandmother, Angieszka, had a brother Jan, who was born 24 Jul 1856...a year and a day different from Brenda's great grandfather.  My great granduncle Jan married Marianna MODELSKI in Leki Gorne and I found 5 children born to them.  Marianna died 17 Sep 1887 in Leki Dolne, Galicia, Austria Poland.

I started collecting information in the U.S. records about Brenda's Jan SZTORC, trying to find a piece of information that would link him to my Jan SZTORC in Leki Dolne, Poland.  Between Lisa and me, we found a lot of circumstantial evidence that strongly suggested the two Jans were one and the same.  I ordered a copy of the microfilm from the LDS (Mormon) church that contains the marriage banns for the Chicago Jan SZTORC and his wife Katarzyna BRANDYS.  Listed on the banns was the name of Jan's first wife and her date of death in Poland...which matched the information I had from the Leki Gorne Parish records.  Connection!!

There used to be a searchable birth index for St. John Cantius Church on the PGSA website. I extracted these entries of children born to John and Kathryn:
Children of John SZTORC and Kathryn BRANDYS

Lisa, the SZTORC researcher who contacted me, had a family group sheet compiled by another family member that listed seven children born to John and Kathryn:  Adalbert Isidore, Mary Sophie, Lottie Thecla, Elizabeth Ann, Julia Brigid, Irene Anna and Josephine Helen.

Adalbert Isidore / Albert Fred STORC was born 7 Jan 1894 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  He married Rose NETZEL on 19 Oct 1944 in Cook County.  Albert died on 31 May 1945 in Chicago and is buried at St. Adalbert Cemetery in Niles, Cook County.

Death Notice: STORC, Albert , beloved husband of Rosalia, step-father of Loretta and Gladys.  Funeral Monday, June 4, at 9:30 a.m.,...to St. John Cantius Church.  Interment St. Adalbert 's.  (From Lisa Link, Ancestry.com family tree)

Based on information from various sources, Adalbert / Albert's wife Rose was previously married.  The family group sheet Lisa shared with me had Rose's name listed as Rose CUBAK NETZEL.

At FamilySearch.org I found a birth record for Rose Marie CUBAK, born 17 Sep 1906 in Chicago.  Her parents were Peter CUBAK and Anna PAVELEK, both born in Galicia, Poland.

As an aside...there is no letter 'V' in the Polish alphabet; the letter 'W' is pronounced like a 'V'.  I think the name PAVELEK was probably PAWELEK.  I did a Google search for cubak +pawelek and found both these names listed in a brief index of surnames found in the microfilmed Ocieka, Poland Parish Records*.  Ocieka is the where Katarzyna BRANDYS was born, according to Jan and Katarzyna's marriage record.

After Albert's death, Rose married James J. HOFMANN on 14 Sep 1949, in Cook County, Illinois.  I found a listing in the online Social Security Death Index for a Rose HOFMANN whose birthdate matches the birth record above.

More about brothers Thomas and Andrew SZTORC / STORTZ

While looking through the microfilmed records of St. John Cantius Church (Chicago, Illinois) for my cousin Roman Witek's SZTORC family, I found marriage records for two sons of Adalbertus SZTORC and Anna nee WACHA. Adalbertus was a brother of my great grandmother Agnes SZTORC GALUS. Thomas and Andrew SZTORC / STORTZ were first cousins of my grandfather, Stanislaus GALUS. I checked the Leki Gorne records for other siblings, but did not find any others. In the various U.S. records I've found several variations in spelling of the SZTORC surname. In the 1930 census both brothers were listed as STORTZ, and I've found entries in the PGSA Death Index under this same spelling.

Thomas Joseph SZTORC was born on 10 December 1882 in Leki Gorne / Łęki Górne, Galicia, Poland, house 132. According to the 1910 U.S. Illinois census, Thomas immigrated in 1900.

On 9 November 2007 my online guestbook had the following entry:

HI Marge,
What a wonderful job you have done with this website. Your extensive information I think has lead me to find who my great grandparents were. I believe I am the granddaughter of Walter Stortz, son of Andrew and Catherine who died in his early 20's. We are all from Chicago and reside in the Chicagoland area. My Grandma was pregnant with Walter's child (my father) when Walter died. I dont believe they were ever married or even a long relationship as far as I know, therefore it has been such a mystery what the heritage on my fathers side is. Since discovering your website, I have found that we are of Polish descent. You have helped solve a personal mystery of mine. We have never had any relationship with Stortz side of the family and I am so thankful for the information you have provided. Feel free to write me with more information or if you would like to retrieve any information from us. Thanks so much!
Valerie Reimer (Stortz)

Prior to receiving Valerie's guestbook entry I found an entry in the online California Death Index for a Walter STORTZ.  At this time I have no information to confirm that this Walter was the son of Andrew and Katherine STORTZ.

California Death Index, http://vitals.rootsweb.com/ca/death/search.cgi

Walter's birthdate matched an entry in the Ancestry.com birth index and I found a marriage record in the Ancestry.com marriage index:

The Polish Genealogical Society (PGSA.org) obituary index had a listing for a Wladyslaw F. STORTZ, whose date of death matched the entry in the California Death Index.  I sent to the PGSA for a copy of Wladyslaw's obituary.  My transcription follows the Index entry.

Katarzyna STORTZ obituary

Katarzyna STORTZ, nee KUDŁA, died 22 Feb 1947.

In May 2005 a young woman from Chicago, who found my webpage when looking for her SZTORC family, offered to photograph tombstones of my family in St. Adalbert Cemetery. They include the stones for both Andrew and Katarzyna.
