Roman Witek's SZTORC Family

Roman's mother was Maria SZTORC WITEK, oldest child born to Józef and Eleonora MICZEK SZTORC. Józef SZTORC married Eleonora MICZEK on 14 October 1919 in Łęki Górne Parish in Poland. They were the parents of 11 children, three of whom are still living. One of Roman's aunts lives in the cottage that was the home of Józef and Eleonora, which is located in Podlesie, a few kilometers north of Łęki Górne/Łęki Dolne, Podkarpackie, Poland.  (More about Roman's WITEK family.)

Jozef SZTORC

Eleonora SZTORC
nee MICZEK
The pictures of Eleonora and Jozef bear the stamp of German authorities. They were used to issue the identification cards during Nazi occupation of Poland (1939-1945). [e-mail 2 July 2003]

Eleonora and Józef SZTORC
This photograph of Eleonora and Józef hangs on the wall in Aunt Stephania's home.  If you compare the German identification photos to this one you will see a remarkable resemblance.  Roman said that after the war in Poland, an enterprising person came door to door and offered to make these portraits using the photos from the identification cards.

During a visit to Łęki-Podlesie in May (2003), Roman was given several photographs of relatives who had immigrated to the United States. Following is an excerpt from Roman's initial e-mail to me (5 Jun 2003):

I would like to trace the whereabouts and fates of my grandfathers brothers - Jan (John) and Frank - and sister Stefania who also from Łęki Górne migrated to the USA, all Sztorc. From my May visit to Podlesie I brought some old pictures from their time in the USA. On the back side of one of them there was a stamp of photographer Rozansky from Chicago - I guess that they lived in this city or in the vicinity.

Photographs sent from the United States to family in Podlesie, Poland

These are the photographs that Roman Witek sent me in June of 2003. The wedding photo of Stefania Storc and Edwin Gasoski was the only photo that had names written on it. At the time, we did not know how they were connected to Franciszek or Jan. More recently, Roman sent the photograph of Stefania and Jan Sobota, which also had names written on the back, but again we did not know how they were related. We speculated that the family photographs were of Frank and John.

As I uncovered more information about the U.S. SZTORC family, I updated this page. In February 2005 I received an e-mail from Joseph ZMUDA, grandson of Franciszek and Joanna PLEBANEK STORC - second cousin to Roman WITEK. Additional information has been added to the photograph descriptions since I originally posted them. Following the photographs are the data I have compiled about Roman's U.S. SZTORC family: Frank and Joanna PLEBANEK STORC, Anna STORC and Rudolf MICEK, and John and Katherine BURDELIK STORC.

I found a Frank and Anna STORC family emumerated in the 1930 Illinois census. Roman and I speculated that the photograph on the left is the family of Frank and Anna SZTORC taken about 1920-1921. Children of Frank and Anna listed in the 1930 census were: Sophie (age 17), Joseph (age 15), Mary (age 13), Stephia (age 10) and Edward (age 6). The first four children could be those shown in the photograph. Ages of the children in 1921 would have been 8, 6, 4 and 1; Edward was not born yet.

The photograph on the right appears to be the same couple taken at a later time.

During a trip to Łęki-Podlesie in August (2003), Roman's uncle, Stanisław, mentioned "that the wife of Frank Sztorc was born Plebanek and she came from Szynwald."  I later found the marriage record of Frank SZTORC and Joanna PLEBANEK in the microfilmed records of St. John Cantius Church.
In February 2005 I received an e-mail from Joseph ZMUDA, a grandson of Frank and Joanna STORC. Joe positively identified these photographs as those of his grandparents. The 1930 census named Frank's wife as "Anna," however she is named "Joanna" on the marriage record from St. John Cantius Church in Chicago, and in her obituary from the Dziennik Chicagoski newspaper.

Stephanie was a daughter of Franciszek and Joanna STORC. In her parents' obituaries her married surname was spelled GONSOWSKI.

The online Social Security Death Index at http://ssdi.genealogy.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/ssdi.cgi has a listing for STEPHANIE S GONSOWSKI, born 17 Nov 1919, died 30 Nov 2003 (V), last residence 60634 (Chicago, Cook, IL), Soc Sec Number 345-10-6125, issued Illinois. According to the 1930 Illinois census, Stephanie was born about 1920.

I checked the online Chicago Tribune obituary archive (http://www.chicagotribune.com/) and found an obituary for this person. Following is an extract of the information contained in the obituary:
Stephanie S. Gonsowski dated 3 Dec 2003
Stephanie S. GONSOWSKI, born STORC, husband is Edwin (still living in Nov 2003)
Children: Richard and Sally (wife of Duane Ratay)
Grandchildren: Mark, Brian, Laura, Steven, Kevin
Siblings: Mary (wife of Frank Filipowski); Sophie (deceased, wife of deceased Joseph Zmuda), Joseph (deceased - wife is Stella - still living in Nov 2003), Edward (deceased)
Funeral was from Baran Funeral Home to St. Ferdinand Church. Buried St. Adalbert Cemetery.

In March 2005 this photograph was positively identified by a granddaughter of Frank and Joanna STORC. John and Katherine STORC are seated. Standing behind them, from the left are: John BURDELIK, husband of Bernice; and John and Katherine's children: Bernice, Loretta, and Tadeusz (Ted) STORC.

Anna SZTORC married Rudolf MICEK 19 Sep 1911 in Chicago, Cook County, Illinois.  They had four children.  Son Edward Franciszek was born 5 Sep 1912; he died 8 Sep 1913.  Władysław Józef or Walter was born 2 Nov 1913, and married Marie McDONALD.  Stefania was born 21 Nov 1915;  she married Jan (John) SOBOTA; Józef or Joseph was born 26 Dec 1917.

Anna died about 1918, and Rudolf married a widower, Marianna DUDA DZIURDZIK, on 22 Feb 1919.  Rudolf and Marianna had at least three children:  Józefina or Josephina, born about 1921; and Czesław or Chester, born about 1924.  A stillborn baby girl was born on 2 May 1922.
This was the last photograph to be identified. At first Roman and I thought this might be another photograph of three of Frank and Joanna's children. However, when contact was made by Joe ZMUDA, he did not recognize these folks, who would have been his uncles and aunt were they Frank's children. After all other photographs had been identified, the only family not represented was that of Anna SZTORC MICEK. I asked Joe if anyone could identify these as Anna's children. In March 2005 Joe's aunt Mary confirmed that these are the children of Rudolf MICEK and Anna nee SZTORC.

[Roman says this date is written in the American format - month/day/year. In Poland they do not use '/' as a delimiter.]

Stefania was a daughter of Rudolf MICEK and Anna \ Marianna SZTORC. According to the 1930 Illinois census, Stefania was born about 1916.

In the online Social Security Death Index (SSDI) is an entry for STEPHANY SOBOTA, born 21 Nov 1915, died 23 Dec 1998 (P), last residence 60641 (Chicago, Cook, IL), last benefit (none specified), SSN 320-01-1860, issued Illinois.
