"Funeral Services Held at Casanova for Walter Nourse Promoted Benefits For Farmers During Term as County Agent Walter Burton Nourse, 55, Fauquier County Agent for 12 years, died unexpectedly from a heart seizure at his home near Casanova on Thursday morning, March 3. Private funeral services and internment were held at his home on Friday afternoon. Bishop F. D. Goodwin officiated. Mr. Nourse was born at Weston, near Casanova, in 1893, the son of Mr. And Mrs. C. J. Nourse. A lifelong resident of the county, he had been actively engaged in faring for most of his life. He attended the College of William and Mary and in 1916 received his B. S. degree in agriculture from Cornell University. At the outbreak of World War I he enlisted in the Army as a private, and was commissioned an officer in France. He took part in the St. Mihiel and Meuse-Argonne offensives. After the war he returned to Fauquier and resumed farming activities. IN 1919 he married Miss Jessie Dennett of West Roxbury, Mass. From 1923 until 1926 he was Game Warden for Fauquier, and in 1931 he was in charge of construction work in the county for the Fargo Engineering Company of Jackson, Mich. In 1933 Mr. Nourse was appointed Emergency Agricultural Assistant to the County Agent to facilitate local operation of the AAA. When this program was abolished he became assistant county agent, a position he held until 1937, when he was appointed agent. From his first associated with the County agent's office, Mr. Nourse took an active part in all phases of its work and throughout his tenure of office he was an important figure in all farm organizations in the county. He gave unstintingly of his time and efforts to further agriculture and the interests of farmers in Fauquier County, and was ever ready to lend assistance and advice. While he was assistant county agent he helped to organize the Warrenton Production Credit Association, and assisted with the administration of the National Farm Loan Association in the county. Mr. Nourse worked diligently to bring modern methods of production and marketing into general use by county formers [farmers]
