Comments:
 | John Thomas Moore's date of birth is not certain - we need
to find his grave to have another source and we also need to look at the
1910 Lamar Co., AL census to gather more information. At this point, I
believe the May, 1848 date of birth given in the 1900 Lamar Co., AL census
is the most accurate. |
 | In the Lamar Co., AL census for 1900, the oldest son of JT
Moore, James H., is found a couple of houses away from his parents, and he
is shown with his wife, Elizabeth. They have been married for 13 years and
have no children born and no children living. His date of birth in this
census is given as Jan. 1867 and he is shown as age 33 - all other info has
shown James to be born about 1871 - so further information is needed. The
1900 census also shows that JT Moore and Sarah have been married 30 years (~
1870) but there could be made a case for the years married being 36 - but I
think it unlikely, as Sarah is found living with her parents in 1870 in
Sanford (now Lamar) Co., AL, and I doubt that she could have been married 6
years earlier as she is shown as age 15 in 1870. This is another reason that
I doubt the 1900 date of birth for James, her oldest son, because she would
have given birth to him when she was 12. Her birth date is fairly consistent
from the 1860 Fayette Co., AL census (she's with her parents), the 1870
census mentioned above, and the 1880 and 1900 Lamar Co., AL census records
where she is found as the wife of JT Moore. |
 | The 1900 Lamar Co., census shows that JT and Sarah have
been married 30 years (unless there is an error) and have had 15 children
and 11 are living. This coincides with all other evidence found. The graves
of 3 of the children are found at Mt Zion (Sidney P., Edey, and Lockey) and
they all died prior to 1900. When you apply logic to the rest of the
children found in 1880 and 1900, the only child unaccounted for in 1900 is
John F. Moore (who is shown clearly on the 1880 census). You will also note
that in 1900, Sarah & JT have just had a new son in May, 1900, who they
have named John. I always wondered why they would name two sons
"John" until I finally added up the number of children known to be
alive in 1900, and discovered that the second son, John F. Moore, is not
found anywhere. I have concluded that he has died by 1900 and that is why
they named the "new" son John, too, perhaps as an honor to his
older brother. |
 | When you compare the final estate Order of John Thomas
Moore to the known children of 1900, and taking into account #3 above, there
is more support for the fact that John F. Moore was dead, as is also the
family statement that the daughter, Tommie E., died in childbirth in the
early 1900's. Also, by then Calvin D. Moore, shown in the 1900 census, is
also not mentioned in the final estate order. All of the other children
(most of which we know were living then from other sources) are accounted
for with one minor exception - the 1900 census shows the youngest child
mentioned in #3 above as "John M. Moore" - but the estate docs
refer to a "J. T. Moore" who cannot be anyone else. More info is
needed. |
 | The estate order of JT Moore also mentions as heirs Hewitt
Moore and Frank Moore, who are both minors in 1925, when the estate was
closed. One statement says the address for one of them is unknown, leading
me to believe that they are not the children of JT Moore (as they are not
living with Sarah) but are perhaps grandchildren. As they bear the Moore
surname, I can only conclude that it is possible that they are the issue of
one of the sons of JT Moore, most likely Calvin as John F. was dead by 1900
and his issue would have been over age 21 by 1925. But this is not a sure
thing and more research is needed. |
 | If you go down the lineage, in birth order, it looks like
this at least by 1900: |
James Henry (oldest son) and wife Elizabeth:
no known children (thought to be married 13 years in 1900 with no kids) -
mentioned in estate docs as J. H. Moore
John F. (presumed dead by 1900) no known
marriage or issue
Sidney P. Moore (son) buried in Mt. Zion
cemetery - dead by age 9 in 1874
Mary Ida Moore - married by 1900 to GJ
Robertson- one son born and died 12/25/1897 & a daughter, Autie, who died
young - in estate as Mary I. Robertson (more kids born after 1900)
Braskey Moore (daughter) - married by 1925
to Hindmon - issue unknown - in estate as Mrs. Nebrasky Hindmon
Lockey A. Moore (daughter) - dead by 1880
(nearly 2 years old)
George W. Moore - lived to an old age - had
at least 2 wives - in estate as G.W. Moore in 1925
Calvin D. Moore - b. 1883, shown in 1900
census, but not mentioned in estate - presumed dead by 1925
Biddie Clementine Moore b. 1885 - married to
Gilmore by estate in 1925 - in estate as Mrs. B. C. Gilmore
Hattie L. Moore b. 1888 - married to Baker
by estate in 1925 - in estate as Mrs. H. L. Baker
Cheebie L. Moore b. 1889 - married to
Saylors by estate in 1925 - in estate as Mrs. Cheebie Saylors
Tommie E. Moore b. 1891 - not in estate -
family story says died "young" in childbirth
Edey Moore b. 1892 - dead by 1898 - buried
in Mt. Zion
Noah C. Moore - b. 1896 - in estate as NC
Moore
John Moore b. May 1900 - presumed to be JT
Moore mentioned in estate in 1925 - not confirmed.
This would make the 15 children said to have been born to
Sarah Tucker Sanders Moore in the 1900 census - with 11 living in 1900. Some
assumptions have been made - see above.
