South Carolina Begins: The Records of a Proprietary Colony 1663-1721
Charles H. Lesser
530 pages. Illustrations/Bibliography/Indexes.
PH24 $43.00 postpaid

This thoroughly documented study contains detailed descriptions of most of South
Carolina's records before 1721. Chapter 4, which covers probate records, is of
special interest to genealogists. Many of South Carolina's earliest wills were
destroyed during the Civil War and in an earlier 1698 fire, but indexes to the
destroyed records survive and have allowed a sophisticated reconstruction of the
lost records. This chapter provides citations to probate-related records for
some 1,285 persons who died in the colony before 1721. Other chapters provide
guidance in the use of a wide array of other records as well as basic
institutional histories and short biographies of the figures who created and
kept the records.
