THE INDEX. I'm not sure what the "official" title is for the index you ask about. I'm sitting here looking at pages I've copied from it. I refer to it as the "South Carolina Plats Index" or the "Plats Cross-Index" but, that isn't shown on these pages. The title line at the tops of these sheets reads as follows: "03/31/87 S.C. DEPARTMENT OF ARCHIVES AND HISTORY ALPHABETICAL INDEX" This is an alphabetically cross-indexed computer printout of land surveys and plat recordings. Each item is indexed under several entries. Including an entry under each person named, and again under waterbodies mentioned in the description of the property. This can be very useful if you know where someone owned land, but don't know what names, spellings, or counties to look under. You could for example look up all State Plats granted which contain "Kings Creek" in the plat description. But, I don't think this Cross Index includes all land records. I think it only includes State Plats which are lands granted to a person directly from the State. Maybe I'm wrong, but I don't think private transactions are included, just plats granted by the State. On the following pages you can find a link to an extract of Coker names from the cross-index that I posted some time back. http://members.tripod.com/~SCROOTS/land.html http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Park/8848/land.html 2. SOURCE OF NOTES IN SUBJECT MESSAGE. I'm wondering that myself. I don't remember right now. But, I've been up most of the night monitoring Hurricane Bonnie, so my brain is not "tuned" to recalling such details today. I'll probably remember eventually when and where I took these notes. I would have expected it to be from the SC Archives. I spent most of my life in Columbia where I was born and went to school (pre-school through University). As a result, I had ready access to the State Archives and Caroliniana Library. Much of the materials in my files come from those sources. But, I've also lived in Charleston 1979-1981 and 1989-now. So, I also have materials from archives and libraries here. These notes are in my hand and were written on the back side of an agenda for a seminar about automatic temperature control systems. I think that seminar was held in Charleston around June 1985, or 86? So, maybe I took these notes while I was in Charleston? Well, guess I should go re-find these documents and see what they contain. I'm scheduled to be in Columbia next week for a couple of days and I plan to spend some time at the Archives. Maybe I can check about this then.
