Linda,
     You do have to have something on the wives.  Since that is the other 
half of the direct line as to speak.  I know it doesn't make any sense but 
that is the way it has always been.  If you have a family member that has 
joined under the same patriot then you only have to prove your connection up 
to that point.  Unless the papers are over ten years old.  The DAR is trying 
to crack down and requiring more information that they use to.  Way back 
there wasn't as much information available as it is today.  As I said there 
are people in the local chapter that are supposed to help you with your 
papers.  Please don't give up.  Give them another try.
