Subject: RE: Fairfax Shield - Coat-of-Arms & Motto From: Fairfax, Dan Date: February 08, 1999
Hello John,
Totally Awesome!!!....my daughter took a French course in college and "I am
free during my life" was her interpretation....I like your interpretation
and will adopt it acordingly...french grammar is not my cup of tea...we will
use "I will be steadfast all my life" and we deeply appreciate this
convention of thought....the MOTTO is hereby accepted "Across the Big Pond",
effective February 8, 1999.....SALUTE!!!
What you have suggested is totally acceptable and we are looking forward to
ordering wall placques from our FAIRFAX SOCIETY OF ENGLAND as soon as
you'all can provide us with this opportunity....many, many thanks for this
excellent "End of 20th Century" Commemoratory Project.
By the way, were you able to look into acquiring photos of the AGM meeting

>
> "JE LE FERAY DURANT MA VIE"
> Motto of Fairfax of Gilling from 1620.
> Translation;
> "JE"- I.
> "LE"- On its own is the masculine definitive article, but is used here in
> conjunction with "FERAY", the ending "AY" pertains to possessiveness, the
> "FER" pertains to "solidness" - from the root for "iron" the two words "LE
> FERAY" - stability - steadfast - sincerity.
> The whole motto is generally translated as ;-
> "I WILL BE STEADFAST ALL MY LIFE".
>
> "FARE-FAC"
> This motto occurs generally with groups claiming descent from Denton, my
> own, Towton branch, adopted cira 1780.
> It is Latin based meaning "SPEAK THEN DO".
>
> The shield facing can be of Gilling since the twelve century or of Denton,
> fifteenth century, the deciding factor being the colours. (tinctured)

> The motto is not part of the shield itself, but is selected by the
> individual's preference.
> A crest, where used, signifies the individual's rank.
> Often there is a phrase over the shield,
> Gilling 1620 is described as:-
> Shield - Argent. Three bars gemelles surmounted by a lion rampant sable.
> Motto - "Je le feray durant ma vie".
> Additional scroll at top - "FAIRFAX OF GILLING 1620"
> (Authority - Herald and Genealogist Vol. vi page 627,
> and Burk's General Armoury 1884.)

> Hope this is of interest.
