Dear John and Friends:
Regarding Ft. Sullivan/Moultrie. I visited there a couple of years ago.
The site of Ft. Sullivan was described as being nearer the beach. You
couldn't walk out to it, and nothing was left of it. The newer building,
Ft. Moultrie proper, I believe was built after the Revolution. I have
some materials on the fort at another location. I'll dig them out if
interest warrants. I do remember that a very prominent Native American
leader is buried beside the front entrance. Osceola perhaps?
Ft. Sullivan was the fort which was built from swamp palmetto tree
trunks, and the British canon balls bounced off of them. Sir Peter
Parker was the British commander, and his ship The Bristol was hit
seventy times. He wrote a poem about it which is rather humorous.
Also, Patriot Commander Moultrie's brother was an avid Tory. There's
also an interesting story about a ptariot who with great danger to
himself hoisted the Patriot flag over the fort as it was being fired
upon. He was later killed in another battle. I can't remember his
name-anybody? I also believe Francis Marion was in this battle.
Cheers,
Holley
