According to Funk & Wagnall
Tithe- a tax or assessment of one-tenth;loosely, any ratable tax. In
England, a tenth part of the yearly proceeds arising from lands and from
the personal industry of the inhabitants, for the support of the clergy and
the church. The tenth part of anything. A small part.
