Subject: Re: Unacceptable sources per Colonial Dames XVII Century From: Greg Simmons Date: January 08, 2000
I read the post of Unacceptable sources. The items are
Unacceptable as proof for institutions such as the Daughters and Sons of
the American Revolution and others in getting your Ancestor registered.
That does not mean however that every word in these materials are wrong.
It means that some errors are in the material and these Institutions
will not accept them as proof of your ancestor's linage.
I have used Historical Southern Families (Boddie) and have
found that some of the information to be correct. I have also found some
errors through my research that are Wrong. That does not mean I stop
using them. They help me locate areas to search. It is up to me to
verify the information given , be it Historical Southern Families
(Boddie), or Pioneers of the Wiregrass, or any other item listed. These
resources are a guide and not the all in all. I think most people know
that when they use these sources they are to be verified and not to be
taken at face value.
The LDS site and the IGL records as well as all the other
information was contributed by other researchers as a guide to help
others. Even if you get the information from a CD that has information
these are sources that need to be checked out and not taken as truth. It
does not mean we need to stop using them. We just need to check out to
see what information is true and what is not.
If you of course plan on using these materials to
register an ancestor to the DAR or SAR or any other orginzation they
would not be able to be used. There should be no problem in using them,
just as long as you can verify the information with other records to
show what information is true and what is not.
