  The Surname Seay - English??

Some documented facts about the surname.

The surname Seay is a curious one, to be sure. All of the members of the various (European origin) branches of the Seay families that I have contacted pronounce it like the third letter in the alphabet. That is, it sounds like the English word "see," meaning to view, like the English word "sea," meaning ocean or large body of water.

Thanks to the diligent research accomplished by Raleigh F. "Sandy" Seay of Orlando, Florida, a great deal of interesting information has been uncovered about the surname Seay. It seems that except for the occasional individual working outside of his home country, the only places on Earth where people with the surname Seay reside are the USA and the UK (specifically Northern Ireland).

Research indicates that the name's meaning lies in the sound of the name itself. That is, it is meant to identify someone who is a resident of a location near an ocean seashore. So one should not be entirely surprised to learn that there may be families named Seay who share no blood relationship whatsoever.

With considerable justification some feel that the surname originates in Ireland. The primary point of support for this feeling is the straightforward fact that the surname doesn't exist (outside the USA) anywhere except for Ireland. However, in researching the origin of the surname other considerations also come to light.

If one is interested in the origin of the surname one should consider the fact that chronological records do not support the notion that it originated in Ireland. The following are the earliest known, official records of the surname SEAY in the locations as indicated.
