The Holton Recorder, January 10, 1901(extracted by Kathie Simon):

John Henry Bateman was born in Coshocton, Ohio, April 12, 1840, and died at his home in Liberty township in this county, January 2, 1901, aged 60 years, 8 months and 20 days. When nine years old he with his parents and family removed to Canada, where they lived until the fall of 1855, when they moved to Minnesota, where they lived during the fall and winter following. From the spring of 1856 until the spring of 1857 they lived in Marion county, Iowa, and then came to this county and settled on the old Bateman homestead two and a half miles north of this city.
John Henry worked on the farm with his parents until the breaking out of the war, when he enlisted in the home militia and went to Fort Leavenworth where he tried to enlist in the United States service, but was rejected because of the loss of two fingers and the crippled condition of a third on his right hand. In the spring of 1862 he drove an ox team with a load of flour and bacon through to Colorado, and remained in that territory, California and Arizona most of the time in the latter territory, for the ensuing four and a half years, returning to this county in the fall of 1866, where he has since lived. In the fall of 1870 he was united in marriage to Miss Mary F. Dooley, his now bereaved widow. To this union were born six children. Two little boys and one baby girl died in infancy. The other three, Charlie aged 29, Clara aged 20 and Scottie aged 12, survive to mourn the loss of a kind and loving father.
While living in Iowa at the age of 16 he was converted and joined the Methodist church of which he remained a loyal, faithful, and consistent member until his death.
As a citizen and neighbor Mr. Bateman stood deservedly high. He had the happy faculity[sic] of making everybody his friend and winning and retaining the respect and entire confidence of all who knew him. He was one of the best and most successful farmers in the county. As a result of his industry and good management he owned at his death several hundred acres of excellent land, improved with one of the finest and best farm houses in the county, a barn that cost between two and three thousand dollars, a large, fine orchard and many head of fine stock. Besides the farm property he was a stockholder and director of the State Bank of Holton.
As a church member he was zealous and liberal, always ready to do his share of the work and bear his share of the expense.
In the year 1878 he was elected county commissioner for the one year term, and in 1879 he was re-elected for a three years’ term. It was conceded by all and is yet by those who were at that time conversant with county affairs that he made one of the best commissioners the county ever had and he could have been re-elected almost without opposition if he had allowed his name to again go before the people, but he felt that he could not spare the time from his farm any longer. Since then he has been solicited at various times to allow the use of his name for county treasurer and other responsible positions, but he has firmly but respectfully declined. He seemed to have an aversion for political strife which all the persuasion of his friends failed to overcome.
His health commenced to fail early last spring, when something like bright’s disease seemed to fasten upon him. During the summer he was not able to do much work and he gradually grew weaker as the disease progressed and several weeks before his death, although still able to be around, he gave up all hope of recovery. He was calm and cheerful through it all and arranged his business affairs with the same judgment and coolness as had always characterized his business transactions. To all appearance death had no terrors for him and when the time came he entered the “valley and shadow” with as much calmness and assurance as the brave soldier marches into battle.
The funeral which occurred at the residence on Friday, the 4th, was a quiet affair, devoid of all pomp or parade. The neighbors, from quite a considerable section of the county, assembled. A male quartet, consisting of M. D. Asher, W. A. Smyth, H. C. Tucker and Guy Asher sang several appropriate selections. Rev. McKean of the Presbyterian church led in prayer, and Rev. J. B Vernon, Mr. Bateman’s pastor, delivered a brief but appropriate funeral discourse. The pallbearers were John Q. Myers, J. W. Lamb, A. Bumgardner, George Haag, Joseph Hill and M. M. Beck.
The body of our deceased friend was laid to rest in the Holton cemetery, only the simple but impressive funeral ritual of the Methodist church being read at the grave by Rev. Vernon. (Extracted and transcribed by Kathie Simon)

After four years of marriage they had no children. In 1930 they lived in Holton, Kansas. Charles was said to be a farm overseer.

1856 Iowa state census and 1870 Census, Franklin Tp, Jackson county, Kansas (extracted by K. Simon) both indicate that William was born in Ohio; however, as 1851 census gives Canada (now Ontario) as place of birth I am assuming the earlier reference is probably correct.

Marriage records from Jackson County give 4 different marriages for Robert Bateman. It is not certain that these are all the same Robert, but the death dates for the wives, obtained from cemetery records, do make it possible. I have seen a letter in which a resident of Holton was reported to have said that Robert had three wives. In 1920 Robert was a widower living with his son-in-law, Marion Shields in Liberty tp, Jackson county.

Robert married 1 (1) Martha A. Whitenot on 23 Dec 1871 in Jackson County, Kansas. Martha was born 2 in 1852 in Ohio. She died in 1881 in Jackson Co., Kansas. She was buried in Holton Cemetery, Kansas.

John was not living with the rest of his family on the 1851 census (actually recorded as of January 1852). He was probably the John Bateman, age 14, living with John Papineau and Catherine Bateman on Lot 12, 2nd Concession. The exact relationship between his father William and John P. is not yet proven.
John and Elizabeth lived in Lincoln Tp, Washington County Kansas at the time of the 1870 census, which indicated that their son John, then aged 2 years, had been born in Canada. This indicates that they moved from Ontario to Kansas between 1868 and 1870. The Jackson county, Kansas naturalization record for John W. Bateman, age 30 years, arrived 24 September 1868 is presumed to be this man. John and his family then returned to Ontario where their daughter Mary was born in 1876. They were in Caradoc Tp, Ontario for the 1881 census, and Elizabeth died there in 1883. John was left an inheritance by his aunt Louisa Bateman (nee Mills), who died in 1887. According to her will, at that time John was living in Smithland Iowa, an area where some related Batemans still live.
John later returned to Kansas and in 1900 was living with his daughter Mary in Lincoln, Pottawatomie county, Kansas. That census indicated he immigrated to the USA in 1870. The following death record is believed to be for this John:

He was said to have entered the USA in 1885. William S. and Margaret Bateman moved to Weeping Water City, Cass county, Nebraska by 1910 and remained there in 1920. In 1930 Margaret was a widow, still in Weeping Water City.
William married Margaret Manson on 29 Oct 1893 in Woodbury County, Iowa, USA. Margaret was born 1 in Feb 1872 in Iowa, USA.

In 1910, after 16 years of marriage, Margaret had given birth to one child who was no longer living.
301 M ii John Bateman was born 1 in 1868 in Ontario.

The 1895 state census for Iowa places John, and his brother David in Iowa living in the same area as their brother William S. and cousin, Richard W. Bateman: Little Sioux, Woodbury county. John and David are said to be Episcopalian.
        John married Mary Chambers.
302 F iii Jane Bateman was born in Jul 1870 in Kansas.

The 1881 census indicates that Jane and David were born in the USA. I believe they may have been born in Kansas. By the process of elimination I believe Jane is the "Jennie" Bateman who married William Allen in Kansas.
Jane married William A. Allen on 5 Dec 1894 in Jackson County, Kansas. William was born 1 in Jul 1864 in Kansas.
303 M iv David Newton Bateman was born on 24 Oct 1872 in Uncertain. He was christened 1 on 13 Sep 1876 in Christ Church, Delaware, Middlesex County, Ontario.

The 1881 census indicates that Jane and David were born in the USA, perhaps in Kansas? However, the 1895 state census for Iowa places David and his brother living in the same township as their cousin, Richard W. Bateman. David's place of birth is listed as Canada.
304 F v Mary Esther Bateman was born 1 in May 1876 in Canada (English).

Mary was living with her widowed father in Pottawatomie County, Kansas in 1900.
Mary married 2 Schilling 1 in Kansas.

82. Richard W. Bateman 1 (William , George , Charles ) was born on 15 Jul 1847 in Middlesex County, Canada West. He was christened 2 on 15 Jun 1851 in Christ Church, Delaware, Middlesex County. He died in Jackson County, Kansas.

Baptism sponsors: Robert Bateman and John Bateman, Christ Church, Delaware. Census Records in Canada: 1852 Caradoc tp, p. 83; 1861 Caradoc, p. 35.
Richard moved to near Smithland, Iowa after his marriage and bred Belgian horses there until 1895.
In 1880 Richard and his family lived in Little Sioux, Woodbury County, Iowa. Richard was said to be a farmer, aged 32, born in Canada. The family is also found there in the 1895 Iowa state census, when Richard was said to be 49, Christina 32, Ervan 9 and Chasie (Katie) 4. Also in Little Sioux at that time were his uncle Thomas Bateman (58--also enumerated with his family in Ontario in 1901)) and cousins John (26) and David (22). This was about the time that Richard and Christina separated.
In the 1900 U.S. Census, Richard had returned to Kansas, and was living in the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation, Jackson county. It stated that he was born in July, 1847 in "Canada (Eng)" and immigrated to the USA in 1866. His parents came from Ireland. This census also listed his second wife, Mary, born May 1841 in Ohio, and whose parents came from Virginia. At the time of the census, they had been married 2 years. In 1910 and 1920 Richard and his third wife Amanda lived in Cedar tp, Jackson county, Kansas. In 1920 his grandson, George Irish (13) was living with them.
I was told Richard had died of lockjaw in 1916, where he was farming on the Pottawatomie Indian Reservation in Jackson County, Kansas, and was subsequently buried. However, I have found him listed in the 1920 census still in Mayetta, Cedar tp, aged 74.

Richard married 1 (1) Christina E. Chapman on 24 Jun 1878 in Jackson County, Kansas. Christina was born 2 in Sep 1862 in Kansas. She died after 1945.

In 1900 Christina (Tina) had apparently remarried 4 years earlier. In that census she was said to have had 9 children, 6 of whom were still living. The two youngest were the children of her second husband, suggesting the other 7, only 4 of whom must have survived until 1900, were Batemans. Ervie, Cathrine and Minnie were living with their mother and step-father in Iowa, and Mary, who by 1900 had married George Irish. Mary and George Irish are the next household (i.e., next to the Ellis-Bateman household) in the 1900 census (handwriting was difficult to read). Adescendant told me the following: Christina married yet a third time and moved to California. She came back to visit after World War II, sometime in the summer. I remember her as a very small woman who sat in a chair, tatting, and her feet would not reach the ground.

They had the following children:

305 F i Mary Elizabeth (Lizzie) Bateman was born 1 in Jul 1879 in Iowa.

In 1880 listed as E. Bateman, aged 10 months. Not listed wilth the family in the 1895 state census? In 1910 had borne 10 children, only 6 of whom were still living.
Mary married 1 George Washington Irish son of Washington Irish and H. L. about 1892 in Iowa. George was born 2, 3 in Apr 1869 in Minnesota.

In 1900 George appears in the census twice. He and his wife and children are listed in the same household as his father, in Sioux City and he is said to have been born in April 1870. As well, he and his brother Claud are listed as boarders in the same household in Bluff, Iowa. George is said to have been married 6 years in both listings. He is also listed twice in 1910: in Iowa with the entire family except his son George who is in Kansas with his grandfather Richard Bateman. The second listing has George and two sons, Guy and William, in South Dakota.
306 M ii Ervan Swanton Bateman was born 1 on 23 Mar 1885 in Smithland, Iowa.

In 1895 state census states born in Woodbury county, Iowa. In 1900 living with his mother and her second husband near town of Smithland, Iowa. In 1910, 1920 and 1930 censuses he and his family were in Sioux City, Iowa.
WW I Draft registration form online at ancestry.com: born 23 Mar 1885, occupation machinist, average height and build, grey eyes, brown hair. Wife Gertrude Josephine Bateman of 207 Helmer, Sioux City, Iowa.
Ervan married 2 Gertrude Josephine Snodgras 1 about 1909 in Iowa, USA. Gertrude was born in 1880 in Iowa. She died in 1975.

1910 census gives age as 26.
307 F iii Katherine Anita Bateman 1 was born 2 in May 1890 in Iowa.

In 1895 age 4, name listed as "Chasie." In 1910 Katie and Claude were living in South Dakota; her half sister, Frances Ellis, and Claude's brother George were living with them. I have heard that she divorced Claude and had three husbands altogether, but no children.
Katherine married 2 Claude Irish 1 son of Washington Irish and H. L. about 1903 in Probably Iowa. Claude was born in Jun 1876 in Iowa.

In 1900 Claude and George are listed as boarders in the same household in ?? Bluff, Iowa. In 1910 Claude and "Katie" were living in Gregory county, South Dakota and had been married for 7 years. George Irish, Claude's brother (who was married to Katie's sister Lizzie--where is she?) and Frances Ellis (Katie's half sister) were also listed in the household.
308 F iv Minnie Bateman was born 1 in Jun 1895 in Iowa.

Richard married (2) Mary about 1898. Mary was born in May 1841 in Ohio.

Mary had had 4 children in 1900--must have been a previous marriage. nfi

Richard married 1 (3) Amanda about 1907 in probably Kansas. Amanda was born 2 about 1852 in Indiana.

In 1910 Amanda had borne 8 children, only 2 of whom survived. The 1920 census says she was then 69 years old and born in Ohio.

84. George Bateman (Edward , George , Charles ) was born on 5 Nov 1835 in Caradoc twp, Middlesex County, Upper Canada. He was christened 1 on 23 Oct 1842 in Christ Church, Delaware, Ontario.

As far as is known, Charles was not the father of Jane's child born in 1880.
310 F ii Mary Catharine Bateman was born in 1865 in Middlesex County, Ontario.

Possibly the Mary Bateman, servant, who died in 1881, reg'n #116?75--neither her age nor the specific death date listed in death registration.
