I originally was given a birth year of 1842 but the following obituary indicates 1840. As his parents married in 1841, I think it likely that 1842 is the correct date. The 1861 census has him aged 19. The exact date of his death is uncertain: the death registration indicates he died 29 November, a family photo taken about the time of his death indicates he died 23 November. In 1901 William was enumerated at Henderson Creek, Yukon and age 61. He had been in the Yukon for 4 years, was a miner and was listed as "owner", presumably the owner of a mine.

BATEMAN; Mr. William died at the home of his daughter Mrs. Milton Doherty on the Points Road on Wednesday afternoon, November/28/1923. He was in failing health and was practically confined to his room for a number of years. A lot of his family lives in the U.S. He was one of the pioneers of Gloucester Co. born on the North side of Big River parish of Bathurst April/9th 1840, the son of John Swanton Bateman of Bathurst and Ellen Jennings of Cork, Ireland. He received his schooling under private tuition. When he was just a boy he engaged in lumbering and helped procure the lumber for many vessels built in Bathurst. The village of Bathurst one hundred families had a shipyard and at the prime of his life he was one of the best judges of standing lumber in N.B. He was also a hunter, and a fisherman. In the early days of the Yukon gold fields he headed a party of eight who made the trip over the (Trail of 98) and spent seven years in the Yukon arriving home in August 1904 and remained at his home the Gould Grant farm on the Points Road. He was twice married, the first wife was Ester Jagoe of New Bandon, his second wife was Grace Benson of Bathurst who died twenty years ago. He leaves his entire family of seven daughters, Mrs. Helen Pickle of Bangor, Maine, Mrs. Emma Smythe of Stuart River, Yukon, Mrs. Ruby E. Morrison of Greenville, Me., Mrs. T. Milton Doherty, Mrs. William Good, Mrs Charles Getty, and Mrs. O. T. Carter all of Bathurst. They were all present at his funeral. Internment was in the St. Alban's Anglican cemetery, which was formerly a part of the Gould Grant farm donated to the Anglican Church Salmon Beach for burial purposes. The service at the graveside was under the Masonic auspices and members of the St. John Lodge. The beautiful Masonic liturgy was read by the Master. The pallbearers were Master W J Kent, Oscar Fenwick, John Miller, Samuel Gammon, Howard Good, and Amos Eddy (unidentified newspaper).
From the record of the Bateman family reunion held near London, Ontario about 1940:
Mrs. Laura Doherty . . . described her father’s first trip to the Klondike over the White Pass on the Trail of 1898 when each person was required to take one ton of provisions and supplies by pack for forty miles from Skagway to Lake Linderman. There were six men in the party which included her father and husband. They crossed Lake Linderman by boat. Her father, Wm. Bateman stayed three and a half years. Came home to Bathurst N.B. for one winter returning to the Yukon for three and a half years. Milton Doherty spent nine months in the Yukon. Her sister Emma married Waldron B. Smythe and she lived at Stuart River for sixteen years conducting a general store, and Post Office. Her husband died in the Yukon and her sister Ruby who had been with her in the Yukon brought his body from Vancouver to Bathurst for burial. Emma Smythe is writing a book on her life in the Yukon and hopes it will soon be published. Mrs. Doherty extended a very gracious invitation to visit them at their home, Gould Grant Farm, Bathurst N.B.

William married (1) Esther Jagoe.

William married (2) Grace Ida Benson on 20 May 1869 in Bathurst Parish, New Brunswick. Grace was born in 1844 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. She died in 1904 in New Brunswick.

Birth date was taken from the back of a photo of Grace's daughters, taken in about 1923. Death date based on William's obituary which states that Grace had died 20 years before William.

William and Grace had the following children:

586 F i Ida Helen Bateman was born 1 on 5 Jul 1869 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. She died 2 on 8 Apr 1950 in Bangor, Maine.

Ida married (1) Samuel Eady on 28 Sep 1887 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick.

Surname sometimes recorded as Eddy.
        Ida married (2) Pickle.

Obit for Helen's father (1923) indicates her married name was Pickle--husband's name unknown. They were residents of Bangor, Maine at that time.

Uncertain if middle name was Elva or Elba. Laura and her husband made several trips to visit Bateman relatives in Cardoc Twp, Middlesex County, Ontario. Their first visit was 1 December, 1924, and they were present at Bateman family reunions in the late 1930s. Hugh Doherty's web site (http://www.islandnet.com/~hdoherty/) gives death date as 1950.
Laura married 1 Milton T. Doherty on 17 May 1899 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. Milton was born in 1862. He died 2 on 17 Jun 1941 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick.

Notes from Bateman family reunion in Ontario:
Milton Doherty recalled some interesting incidents from his trip to Skagway and the Yukon when he accompanied Wm. Bateman and Isaac Roy. They went by train to Vancouver and by boat to Skagway taking three months to make the journey. They had to cross Miles Canyon, which had never been crossed without an Indian pilot. They were the first white men to cross Miles Canyon. They made six boats by cutting the lumber from the trees with a hand rip saw. Some of them were stolen. At last they made one and crossed the canyon with William in the bow and Roy in the stern. Boat went at the rate of a mile a minute. They proceeded to the gold fields at Dawson where they staked their claims and registered. They brought back many souvenirs among them a necklace of gold nuggets to which is attached a miniature miner’s outfit, a placer pan, a pick, a shovel and a sleuce [sic] box which Cousin Milton wears as a watch chain.

In 1881 Catherine was living with her widowed mother and brothers and sisters. Her and Swanton's son was living with his father and paternal grandparents. Swanton and Catherine evidently married whenshe became pregnant with their second child. The baptism records for William and Henry give her name as Jane, although in the 1881 census she was listed as Catherine.

They had the following children:

602 M i Edmond Zacheus Bateman was born on 19 Jun 1878 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was christened 1 on 25 Jun 1878 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst.

Born before Catherine and Swanton married, and in 1881 was living with his father and his grandparents, John and Ellen Bateman.
603 M ii William "Wallace" Bateman was born on 12 Feb 1882 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was christened 1 on 19 Sep 1885 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick. He died 2 on 10 Jan 1903 in Big River, Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was buried on 12 Jan 1903 in St George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick.

Age at time of death 20 years, 10 months, 23 days. Name on official records was William, but he was named as Wallace in the 1901 census (at which time he was living with his uncle Samuel Bateman).
604 M iii Henry (Harry) S. Bateman 1 was born on 6 Jun 1884 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was christened 2 on 19 Sep 1885 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick.

Henry was also conditionally baptised at Sacred Heart Cathedral in Bathurst 12 January 1904. His name is listed as Harry in the 1901 census which gives his birth date as 7 Jun 1885. In 1911 he is Henry S. Bateman.
Henry married 1, 2, 3 Emily (Emilie) Roy daughter of Pierre Roi and Marie Jane Watson on 24 Aug 1903 in St. George's Anglican Church, Bathurst, New Brunswick. Emily was born on 1 Jan 1884 in South Bathurst, New Brunswick. She was christened 4 on 6 Feb 1884 in Sacred Heart Cathedral, Bathurst. She died on 3 Jan 1955 in Bathurst, New Brunswick. She was buried in Bathurst, New Brunswick.

From the obituary: "She is much missed and mourned by a wide circle of relatives and friends and especially in the C.W.L. and Ladies of St. Anne, of which organizations she was an active member." At the time of her death Emily was living with her son Henry. In 1911 her birth year is given as 1886 and her name is spelled "Emelie", perhaps how she spelled it herself?
605 M iv Wilfred Arthur Bateman was born on 15 Sep 1885 in New Brunswick.

No birth registration available, but assume Wilfred must be another son of Swanton and Catherine.

182. Albert Bateman (John Swanton , Swanton , Charles ) was born 1 in Sep 1864 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He died on 27 May 1917 in Gloucester County, New Brunswick. He was buried in Sacred Heart Cemetery, Bathurst.

At the time of the 1871 New Brunswick census, Albert (age 7) and Henry S. (age 4) were living with their brother and sister-in-law, William Bateman and Grace Benson (Gloucester County, Bathurst, Div. 3, p.19). Christ Church (Delaware, Ontario) Parish Record of his marriage to Sarah Bateman indicates that Albert was of Big River, Bathurst, New Brunswick. Not known where Albert and Sarah lived after their marriage in 1890. However, on the 1891 census, Albert age 27 is listed with his parents in Bathurst, and is said to be single? In 1894 Albert signed an autograph book for his niece who lived in the Bathurst/Big River area. He wrote:
"Nov. 2nd 1894.
To Miss Emma Bateman
I have A niece which I love dear
And at parting shed A tear
So please dont read this
for you see
I sign my name just,
Albert B.
(Albert Bateman)"
His mention of "parting" seems to suggest he either lived elsewhere and was visiting at the time or he was about to move away. I cannot find him in 1901, but there is an Albert Bateman, born Sept 1864, living in Bathurst in 1911, who would seem to be this man. Then his wife is Mary, and there are several children. Albert Bateman, age 55, died in Gloucester county 27 May 1917 (NB Archives website), but I cannot find death records for either Sarah or Mary, or birth records for the children listed in the 1911 census.
Obituary found during visit to Bathurst: "BATEMAN, Albert of Gloucester Junction died of pneumonia on the 27/ May/ 1917. He lived in Rough Waters and worked for the Caraquet Railroad. He leaves his wife, four daughters, Frances, Elsie, Cora and Doris. Burial was in the Sacred Heart Cemetery."

Albert married 1, 2 (1) Sarah Ellen Bateman daughter of John Thomas Bateman and Mary Bateman on 6 Feb 1890 in Christ Church Parsonage, Delaware, Middlesex County, Ontario. Sarah was born on 9 Sep 1862 in Caradoc Twp, Middlesex County, Canada West.

Albert married (2) Mary Ida Boucher about 1896 in New Brunswick. Mary was born in Nov 1865 in New Brunswick.

The 1911 census indicates that Mary was of French ancestry--birth registrations for her children revealed her maiden name. Her religion in 1911 was listed as Anglican, although she appears to have been raised Catholic; believed to be Mary Boucher, age 17 in 1881 census, dau of Joseph and Martha, living in Bathurst.
