Notes of Jennie Sharpe Bateman:
I was born on April 6, 1868 in the village of Teeswater, Ontario, in our home here; attended Public School here, until I qualified for High School , which was at Walkerton our County town. Took what was called a Third Class Non Professional Certificate (now Grade 10 I think) in 6 months. Then took a 4 mos Teacher’s Practice or Normal Course, and got my Professional Certificate, and taught for three years in a country school, almost 4 miles N.E. from Teeswater---2-1/2 miles north 1-1/4 mile east. Then went to Harriston and later Kincardiane H.S. to be with sister Bessie (who wanted to go ) for a year and took my Non-Professional 2nd. Class or Grade 11 now. Taught for 2-1/2 years at Westford a sem-country school on the way to Kincardine. Attended Toronto Normal for 6 mos to get Prof. 2nd class Certificate. After that I taught for 2-1/2 years in a country school in Middlesex County about 10 miles from Strathroy and 17 miles from London: where I met my future husband, Wellington Thomas Bateman; and later on I went to Manitoba and taught in the town of Hartney near my sister, Mrs. Wm Forbes’ country home and later in the town of Killarney- (altogether about 4 or 5 years). Then came home to Teeswater to be married in the year 1898, and to our farm home in Middlesex where Fred was born in 1900. Lost one baby before Fred and one after. We sold the farm and moved to Manitoba to farm there in the spring of 1902. Sold out and went to B.C. near Nelson in 1907. Came to Alta. In 1910 and lived there near Calgary continuously till I cam here to Teeswater to take care of my sisters, in 1940, in their old age and infirmity. Sister Mary died October 4th, 1946.
